First of all, I have to confess that I am not a vegetarian myself, but enjoy many vegetarian dishes. I grew up around a vegetarian grandmother and the way she ate always fascinated me. Jointly owned by Huzam Ismail and Therika Miyanadeniya, Cafe Bellissimo is a quaint cafe complete with a white picketed fence and is a great spot for reasonably priced good food. We met with co-owner Huzam who shared with us that Cafe Bellissimo was born out of their joint love of food, and the need to find food that they loved that wouldn’t break the bank. A glaring necessity, because finding good food that’s cheap is hard to come by.
With Dolce Italia opening its doors in Colombo in January 2015, Sri Lankans were able to dig into freshly baked Italian pastries as well as pastas and pizzas. Broccoli. It’s a vegetable that divides the people, some love it and others hate it. For me, it was a slow burn to finally loving it. I detested it as a child, as my mother would steam any ounce of goodness out of it and I would be left with a soggy little tree that would fall apart in my fingers. Now that I’m older, I’ve discovered a wealth of ways to eat broccoli that not only taste good, but are nutritious for me.
Brown bread has become a staple in my household, thanks to my ulcer infested gullet. Since it’s only me that eats it, there is always some remaining bread. One of my few pet peeves includes wasting food. I can’t stand it and I am very strict with myself regarding it. Thus the birth of this sweet treat! It’s super easy and requires a measly amount of preparation time.
When a family member or friend changes something that you are used to seeing them do such as eating, it may come as a bit of a shock. Food is something we consume multiple times a day, it’s tied to cultural traditions and celebrations. You might feel as though they are rejecting an important part of your relationship with them. You might be concerned they aren’t going to get enough nutrition. Maybe you can’t relate to them anymore.
There is always more ways to enjoy a drink rather than having it the usual way we do, thus presenting you with my ever so famous vodka jelly!
