The Ceylon City Hotel, situated at 11, Upatissa Road, Colombo 04, is a fairly new addition to the Sri Lankan hospitality industry. It has been named ‘Best Budget Hotel in Sri Lanka’ for 2015 by Hotel of the Year Awards. On the fourth floor is their multicuisine restaurant Flamingo which serves a variety of dishes that includes Italian, Western, Indian, Arabic, Chinese and Sri Lankan fare. As it has been open to the public recently, we popped by to check it out. 

 

Ambience 

Flamingo is a comfortable little restaurant neatly furnished with a seating capacity of fifty. They also have a small area to be used to lay out a buffet if and when required depending on the in house guests. According to Chef Sunil, breakfast is usually served buffet style. 

 

Food and Beverages 

The juices they served us were really good. The Pineapple and Watermelon (Rs. 350 each) and the Orange (Rs. 400) were equally refreshing and juice was welcome after a long day of work. 

 

Then we went on to taste three of the mains they had prepared. The Beef in Oyster Sauce (Rs. 750) was served with rice and it was accompanied by boiled cauliflower, a few sticks of carrot and pumpkin, beans and stirfried red bell peppers to go with it. The beef was well marinated and flavourful. It was a lovely dish and the quantity was also just right for one. 

Then we tried out the Grilled Fish with Vegetables (Rs. 855) and the Grilled Chicken with Fresh Peppers (Rs. 950). Both dishes were accompanied by the same vegetables with an addition of some chips and garnished with a carved tomato. The fish was very fresh and soft and it had anchovies sprinkled on top. The chicken was also delicious and had a topping of chopped up peppers with a tangy mayo based sauce which was very tasty.

They have a burger promotion on these days. This offer includes a burger with two homemade patties, an extra large portion of fries, coleslaw and a bottle of Coke, all for Rs. 550 (all inclusive). 

 

Service 

The manager, chef and staff were pleasant and obliging. 

If you are in the vicinity it’s a place you should try out for a quick bite as they offer of a variety of yummy food.
