Encore! The 70s, 80s & More … Like You’ve Never, a unique production will be held at the Bishop's College Auditorium on July 18 and 19.
As a full musical production, it will bring together popular music from the 70s, 80s and beyond in a manner that is reimagined with the personality and performance style of The Revelations mixed voice choir with Sanjeev Jayaratnam.
It is not merely a concert of familiar songs but a full musical production built around memory, energy, nostalgia, harmony, movement, and surprise.
The audience can expect songs they know, songs they have sung along to, songs they grew up with, and songs that still carry deep emotional meaning. However, the promise of the show is in the subtitle: Like You’ve Never Heard Before… Comprising music that people recognise. But not simply as covers…
The songs are being shaped into a theatrical concert experience with vocal arrangements, live musicians, choreography, lighting, staging and storytelling.
There is also a contrast -
There will be moments where the audience may want to clap and sing along. Moments where the auditorium may become still. As well as moments of humour, movement and colour. And more importantly, the audience will be reminded why certain songs live for decades.
The production is directed by Sanjeev Jayaratnam, founder and choral director of The Revelations, and a well–known Choral Conductor and Transformational Coach. His work has won international recognition at the highest level.
For Sanjeev Jayarartnam, the show is about taking music that people already love and allowing them to experience it again — with freshness, detail, vocal colour, and emotional truth. The production also brings together a strong creative and technical team.
Assistant Director: Manique Abeyratne, Choreographer: Julian Anderson, Producer: Pemanthi Fernando, Assistant Producer: Amanya Munasinghe, Lighting Design and Execution: Thushara Hettihamu, Sound Engineer: Nishan Daniel
The musicians for the production are Yohan and Dinuka Jayasooriya, Mahira Dissanayake, Shevan de Alwis, Surekha Amarasinghe and Rowena Loganathan. The team is working to create a show that is polished, warm, entertaining, and musically rich.
What Makes This Show Different? Many concerts present songs as individual items. Encore! feels more like a journey. The songs are carefully placed to create contrast and flow. Audience participation is also part of the experience. Some songs naturally invite the audience in — not as spectators only, but as people who have lived with this music.
