Today on WTF Extra, I write about a good friend of mine, who is talented, shy and a very gifted. She has been in the fashion trade for a long time, but has not stepped out and really taken credit. 2015 seems a good year for this, with her family and friends by her side, it was an easy challenge to overcome.

Nilanka says about the brand name La- Sari, “Looking for a name, I wanted something with a local flavour. I referred up some books and found La Sari which means ‘something beautiful’ in Sanskrit.

I thought this would be an appropriate name, as, after all, in my opinion that’s what the end result of fashion and design is - is it not? To produce something beautiful!! With each piece, I aspire to create something beautiful - hence La Sari.”

La Sari started as a hobby back in 2010 and grew into a business. She began with a little shop adjoining her mother’s pre-school , but with her quality of work, it’s not a surprise that it became so popular with the locals and the expatriate community, that had their children at the school. She was then persuaded to open up a shop.

She plays many roles in life apart from being the designer and manager of La Sari.  She is a mother of two girls and a wife who is very actively involved with her husband’s work. So, this show was an achievement in more ways than one.

Her collection was broken into 5 segments -

She opened with Beeralu Lace & Cottons, which was off white inspired by the colours of nature and was her signature line.

Then  she moved on to a very smart  Black & White Collection which was all hand crafted batik, some bold designs - a  combination of silk textures.

Then we had the fun Coloured Collection which was inspired by everything to do with summer.

Next, there was the adorable and fabulous Kids’ Collection, which had floral and pinks, bright and playful- everything perfect for the little ones.

The closing consisted of hand crafted batik sarees - a reflection of years of experience with colours and designs.

She also thanked Daily Mirror and Hi!! for all the support given to make her dream show possible.
