What - Ice Cream
Where - Around Colombo
When - Everyday

This week, I used the bad heat as an excuse to get myself in to some popular ice cream places in Colombo, but as always my life is full of drama. As we set out, it started to rain! But what would stop me from having ice cream? – NOTHING!

It was in 1660 that ice cream was made available to the general public. According to history it’s known that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavoured with honey and nectar. Biblical references also show that King Solomon was fond of iced drinks during harvesting. During the Roman Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 54-86) frequently sent runners into the mountains for snow, which was then flavoured with fruits and juices.

The first official account of ice cream in the New World comes from a letter written in 1744 by a guest of Maryland Governor William Bladen. The first advertisement for ice cream appeared in the New York Gazette on May 12, 1777.

On December 13 the US Celebrates the National Ice Cream Day. Ice cream can make any situation better!

So we put down a few places in Colombo that you need to check out.

STOP 1 - Baskin-Robbins

The most selling item on their iced rack is Cotton Candy (with the cone) and will cost you Rs. 370. Another hot seller is the Bavarian chocolate. They are open everyday from 10AM to 11PM and on weekends all day till midnight.

STOP 2 - The Kingsbury

Their colourful setting in the lobby is a place for some homemade ice cream, and the two flavours I tried were watalappan ice cream. As odd as it may sound, actually it does not taste so bad – it will cost you Rs.360 nett and my second choice was the coconut ice cream – kinda liked it.

STOP 3 - Pop Station

We strayed from ice cream and tried a popsicle; it froze my brain in a good way. You can get these funky ones at either AnM Cupcakes in Colombo 3, or at Café Kumbuk down Horton Place. It will cost you Rs.100. They have all the interesting flavours from passion to pineapple. We went with the most popular - ‘naarang’.

STOP 4 - Carnival

Although known for their terrible service and bad ambience, the Carnival has been everyone’s GO-TO place when it comes to ice cream for years. I love the milkshakes I get there but the scoop I chose was a vanilla choco chip, priced at Rs. 105.

So if the rain does not continue, you know some places to go and enjoy a scoop of joy!
