I’ve known Dilip since my school days. Yes, he was way ahead of me in school, and when it comes to music, he was born with the talent! What has always fascinated me is that his talent isn’t something that came from textbooks. It’s all by ear. Put him in front of any piano, in any room, with any audience, and he’ll somehow make the music feel like it was written for that very moment.

Watching him grow over the years has been a real joy, and seeing The Journey return for a third edition is proof that passion, purpose, and great music never go out of style. This year, he’s going back to where it all began with The Journey 3: Back to My Roots, a concert that’s not just about music, but about faith, memories, giving back, and changing lives through every note played.

Here’s what Dilip had to say about this year’s concert, the story behind it, and why this journey means more than ever.

1. Third time’s the charm! What made you bring The Journey back for a third edition? Was there something unfinished from the first two concerts?

Nothing was left unfinished in the first two—there is simply more of the story to tell! The Journey reflects my evolution from a kid who didn't even own a piano at home to the artist I am today. Each edition explores a different chapter. This third edition—The Journey 3: Back to My Roots—is a brand-new chapter that goes right back to where the music first sparked.

2. This year’s theme is Back to His Roots. Tell me about those roots. Where does this musical journey really begin?

I first started playing for Sunday Mass. My sister, who was the church organist at the time, encouraged me to play by giving me one hymn to play… and gradually increasing the hymns over time. Those roots are deeply tangled in Gospel chords, community singing, and raw emotion. This year is about honouring that foundation, which is why the concert is heavily Gospel-based.

3. Every rupee raised goes to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society. Why is this cause so close to your heart?

Cancer has personally touched and ravaged the lives of so many people close to me, including my late father. It is a brutal illness that drains families emotionally and financially. Music has given me a beautiful life, and I believe in using that gift to serve a greater purpose. Donating 100% of the proceeds to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society is my way of fighting back, honouring those we have lost, and bringing comfort and critical financial aid to the brave patients currently undergoing treatment.

4. This isn’t just another piano concert. What can audiences expect this time that they’ve never experienced before?

Expect a lot of energy and emotion. We are bringing you a powerful Gospel and choir experience. With rich vocals and a full band, it is going to feel less like sitting in a theatre and more like being part of a massive, joyful celebration.

5. You’ve brought together an incredible lineup of singers. Without giving away too many surprises, what made you choose these particular voices?

Most of these beautiful singers performed at my last concert and were so kind to lend their voices once again. Gospel music requires more than just technical skill; it demands power, vulnerability, and deep emotion. Every vocalist in this lineup has a unique sound and a shared heart for giving back. They aren’t just performers; they are storytellers who know how to connect with people on a deep level.

6. As a pianist, you’re often the one making everyone else shine. Is there a particular performance during this concert that you’re personally looking forward to?

I love making our vocalists shine, but I also cherish the quiet, solo moments on stage. That is when I feel closest to the music and the audience. I do have a favourite performance in mind, but why not wait and see?

7. Looking back at the previous two concerts, is there one unforgettable moment that still gives you goosebumps?

At my first concert, a young kid who beat cancer came up on stage to hand me some flowers. Seeing hope and life standing right in front of me like that is something I will never forget. It made me realise exactly why we do this, and it gave The Journey its true purpose.

8. Music has an incredible ability to heal. Have you ever had someone tell you your music changed or comforted them during a difficult time?

Yes, and those messages mean more to me than any applause. People often come up after a hotel gig or a private show, or message me to say a specific melody brought them peace during a hard time. During COVID-19, I recorded songs on my phone—especially Gospel music—and sent them to people who were struggling, including a few terminally ill patients. Music goes straight to the heart without needing words. Knowing my playing has been a sanctuary for someone else is incredibly humbling.

9. Brandix has come on board to present this event. How important is it to have partners who believe in using music to give back?

It is everything. Putting together a production of this scale requires a lot of support. Having a partner like Brandix—who cares just as much about giving back and helping the community—changes everything. They aren't just corporate sponsors; they are true partners who believe that music has the power to change lives.

10. If someone has never attended one of your concerts before, why should The Journey 3 be their first?

Because this is our most raw, joyful, and meaningful concert yet. You don't just come to listen; you come to feel. If you want to experience incredible music and a room full of positive energy, this show will lift your spirits. Best of all, buying a ticket directly helps change lives.

11. Lionel Wendt Theatre has seen countless legendary performances. What does performing on that stage mean to you personally?

The Lionel Wendt is the true home of Sri Lankan theatre and arts. Walking onto that stage gives you a special feeling because of all the history in the room. For me, hosting The Journey there feels like coming home. It is a cosy venue that allows me to connect with every single person in the audience, making it the perfect space to share this personal story.

12. Beyond the music, what do you hope people feel when they walk out of the theatre that night?

I want people to feel full of hope and light. Life can be chaotic, but I want everyone to leave the theatre feeling refreshed and happy. I want them to be proud that they helped a worthy cause.

13. Let’s talk tickets. Where can people buy them, what are the different categories available, and when should they grab them before they sell out?

Tickets aren't out just yet, but they will be available very soon both online and directly at the Lionel Wendt box office. The ticket categories are priced at Rs. 8,000, Rs. 5,000, Rs. 3,000, and Rs. 2,000 for the balcony. Make sure to grab yours as soon as they are released!

14. If I asked every singer in your lineup to describe you in just one word, what do you think they’d all say?

I'm not sure... why not ask them! Maybe a big bully! Haha

15. Finally, complete this sentence for me: “The Journey isn’t just a concert… it’s …it’s a story!!!”
