However, modernization and space constraints have led us to adapt to smaller living spaces with clearly defined boundaries. Boundaries are essential for us to feel protected and safe. As children, our boundaries are shaped by the family unit, and as we grow older, they expand to include school, work, and other communities we join.
Our most important space is our home, where we go to be ourselves, find support, and rest. The home is essentially a miniature version of the entire universe; in other words, understanding the influence of the macrocosm on the microcosm is essential to identifying the causes and effects of a building and its impact on its occupants.
Boundaries, or compounds as we often call them, are important in our relationships with neighbours and the world at large, as demarcation provides a sense of security. Although many condominiums and housing projects overseas and in various parts of India have adopted demarcation between properties using gardens and hedges—which is aesthetically pleasing—a proper boundary wall between buildings offers more defined support.
In China, the ideal is to have an open view in front of the building, with a low barrier to mark the boundary. Feng Shui strongly advises that the front barrier or wall should be minimal and not exceed the height of the ground floor window sill or waist level. Many homes isolate themselves from the outside world with excessively tall compound walls, resulting in a sense of disconnection.
The boundaries of the building can be used thoughtfully, serving as a backdrop for plants while also providing protection. Whether we build walls, erect fences, or plant hedges, it is important to maintain a sense of proportion and choose plants that will not outgrow their space or interfere with the buildings. In insecure areas of the garden, we can place barriers along the perimeter, but should avoid using prickly plants.
Boundaries can be constructed from various materials such as bricks, precast blocks, wood panels, chain link fencing, split bamboo, or simple hedges. In every case, skill is required to achieve a visually pleasing and durable result. If a plot has curved boundaries, placing a straight wall along the edge will detract from the overall appearance. Additionally, when building a hedge with mixed plantings, improper weaving and inadequate support can cause problems in the future.
Ensure that you do not place very tall main gates on extremely high pillars, as this can give the impression of a high-security jail when viewed from outside. Gates that are simple and curve upward from the ends toward the centre are considered effective for channelling positive energy into the home. Gates with openings at the top are also favourable. Avoid placing spear-like objects or decorative metal pieces with sharp points facing outward, toward the road or driveway, as these generate negative chi.
Most importantly, a boundary not only demarcates your home but also, when surrounded by the right plants, provides a sense of tranquillity to its occupants.
