· It also protects sensitive areas of the dog such as the anus and the vagina

· The dog can use it to swat insects that rest on its back

Initially tails were docked of hunting dogs such as, Rottweilers and Fox Terriers because they used to get injured while hunting. However now it is more of a fashion statement to have dog with a docked tail.

Certain buyers refuse to purchase dogs with long tails so therefore vets only dock tails if the owner insists that the dog is for sale.
Dobermans on the other hand have their ears cropped as well in order to look good.
