CFW Day 3

Day 3 of HSBC CFW 2016 saw the entire evening dedicated to men's fashion. Slick suits, crisp shirts, trendy pants and casual attire dominated the show with each designer showcasing a unique collection. Mevan Kaluarachchi stole the show with his trendy collection inspired by a painting by David Hockney. Clean lines and well-tailored outfits dominated his collection. Shanika Samarakkody, the token female designer, also presented a noteworthy menswear collection. House of 3 by designer Sounak Sen Barat, presented a vibrant collection of men's attire that was bang on trend.

Conscience

One of Sri Lanka’s leading ethical brands, Conscience was launched to create a ‘guilt free’ ecosystem that will provide a global platform for all ethical businesses and consumers to engage in responsible commerce.

“Conscience creates a story with interesting interventions to Mandarin/Nehru collar and silhouettes of the shirts. De-constructed and re-constructed using an interesting palette of colours which will find an appeal with men who stay safe and also the ones who experiment. Conscience has stuck to its core and is appreciated by evolved minds.”

Gihan Ediriweera

G by Gihan Ediriweera is the undisputed King of tie and dye in Sri Lanka. Known for his vibrant hued ready-to-wear comfortable clothing, his menswear collection is a departure from his brightly coloured creations that he is reputed for.

“My menswear collection is called ‘White Crows’ and features various shades of white. I have used tie and dye in a very subtle manner which is a departure from the norm for me. This is a men’s ready-to-wear collection which I have created as I want to bring an element of sexiness to men’s clothing. Men need to be sexy too.”

Heshan De Silva

Heshan created his label 22.02, designing his signature collections for men and women. Having studied and worked in Australia and New York, Heshan’s fashion journey in Sri Lanka has been a revealing one.

“This collection has clothes for both sexes and draws inspiration from a mix of gothic and the 70s. There is also an element of sportswear in the collection. I have used a lot of metallic fabrics reminiscent of the 70s. I have also included an accessory line of bags to complement the collection.”

Samant Chauhan

Delhi based designer Samant presented his menswear collection which contained simple and clean cut silhouettes. Samant works mostly with handwoven Indian textiles as his passion for working for the cause of his native Bhagalpur master weavers earned him the young Entrepreneur Award by the British Council in 2009.

“It was fantastic. Colombo is always very warming to us so I really loved it. The inspiration was based on the British railway when they came to India and the whole British locomotive”

Shanika Samarakkody

Coming of age as a notable designer, Shanika’s label Agent is an independent men’s clothing and accessories brand combining innovative designs with high quality apparel.

“When I started this collection I had two concepts in mind, the 1920’s Gatsby era and pops of primary and secondary colours. I challenged myself to create a collection which incorporated both these elements.”

House of Three

Bangalore based designer and stylist Sounak Sen Barat draws his inspiration from various spheres of modern lifestyle, new age music, graphics, modern art and architecture. Luxury pret women’s wear is his forte.

“It’s always a pleasure. This is my second time and the people are so warm. It’s a home away from home! The collection is about where I’ve been exploring the possibility where one can exist in absolute harmony which means ones spiritual identity and worldly attachments. There’s a myth where people think that people of fashion are spiritually shallow and that people who are spiritual have to give up worldly ties. I believe otherwise”

Mevan Kaluarachchi

Sri Lankan born Holland based designer Mevan’s eponymous label Mevan Kaluarachchi is a reputable brand in men’s clothing. The recipient of the prestigious Body Fashion Design Award 2003 while a student at the Wilem de Kooning Academy for Fine Arts in Rotterdam, Mevan’s traineeship was with Alexander van Slobbe.

"I was inspired by a painting of David Hockney called the Big Splash. This collection is all about easy living in the summer and is well suited for a tropical island like Sri Lanka. I have used cottons, silk, satin and natural fabrics. The pieces all have a tailored fit. I have tried to combine an element of sportswear and leisurewear into this collection."
