If you are a fan of the cult movie Aliens, then you are also most probably a fan of the Alien Vs. Predator video games that have come out since and while the graphics and gameplay were never impressive, most of us almost ritually played the games as they were released. Now, however, it seems that developers are finally trying to raise the bar of the franchise by releasing a sequel to Aliens 3 in a video game format and by the looks of it, they have done a pretty good job.

Plot

The story follows the detachment of colonial marines who have been sent to search for Elizabeth Ripley and investigate what went on in the USS Sulaco. If these details seem completely alien to you, then just go through Wikipedia to follow the plot of the Aliens franchise. This element will mostly appeal to those who are big fans of the movie and the game and the ability to explore the new story via the game sounds really exciting. The game will be based in various locations and scenes that were seen in the movie.

In addition to Aliens 3, the game will also be making references to the upcoming sci-fi movie Prometheus, which was originally conceived as a prequel to the movie Aliens.

Interestingly, it seems that the game will not make much use of cut-scenes to describe the story. Therefore, uncovering the plot will be based solely on the actions of the players.

Game Play

One of the interesting features of Colonial Marines is the drop in/drop out multiplayer feature. The whole campaign can be played with a squad of four players who can drop in and out of the game in self-contained missions without disrupting the overall plot line. The game’s designers were keen to point out that it is always better to move in teams if possible so that have the necessary cover throughout the game and not to mention, someone to hold in terror when a Xenomorph charges at you randomly.

Also, something else that I admire is the fact that the game will not feature a HUD to display vital information such as ammunition, health and radar; features that we have come to assume is a standard feature of most first-person shooter games. Removing this feature provides a more realistic experience. As a result, hunting down aliens would require you to look at a portable radar system, which apparently can malfunction at times, providing players with yet another level of extreme suspense.

The game will also feature the standard weapons that have been showcased throughout the recent years including pulse rifles, flamethrowers, motion trackers and heavy machine guns. Players will get to used these awesome weapons on the Xenomorphs, which will include the standard types we have seen in the movies and a few new ones designed especially for the sequel.

Last but not least, we are told that the combat system will be dominated by gauntlet runs and last stands. The former refers to battling out aliens while on the move and the latter refers to standing your ground while fighting back alien hordes. I would really recommend watching the trailer to get an idea of both those combat features. Speaking of the trailer, I have a feeling you guys will love it; beautifully made.

The game is set for release at the end of the year.
