It doesn’t matter how old you are or how busy life becomes. The moment you take that first spoonful, something changes. You smile a little more, your worries fade for a while, and for those few moments, you’re simply enjoying the present.
That’s exactly how I felt when I visited La Crème Ceylon.
Today, La Crème Ceylon has become one of Colombo’s favourite dessert destinations, known for its homemade ice cream cakes, profiteroles, meringues and cream-based desserts. Their Nutella, Biscoff, Caramel and Faluda ice cream cakes have become favourites for birthdays and celebrations, earning the brand a loyal following for its consistency and quality.
But instead of ordering one of the signature favourites, I found myself choosing something a little unexpected.
Bubble Gum.
Now before you judge me, hear me out.
Bubble Gum has always been one of my favourite flavours. It’s colourful, fun and filled with nostalgia. It reminds me of a time when happiness came in the form of a simple cone after school or a family outing.
As I enjoyed my ice cream, I had the chance to chat with Rashmika, the founder behind La Crème Ceylon.
She laughed and said, “We actually made Bubble Gum for the kids. They’re the ones who mostly like it.”
She wasn’t wrong.
But I couldn’t help thinking that whenever we eat ice cream, there’s always a little child inside every one of us.
No matter how grown-up we become, that child never really disappears.
The Bubble Gum ice cream was beautifully balanced. Sweet, but not overly sweet. Creamy, smooth and comforting. More than anything, it tasted homemade.
That, to me, made all the difference.
People often say food made with love tastes different. It sounds like a cliché until you experience it yourself. There was something incredibly comforting about knowing this wasn’t simply another dessert rolling off a production line. It was made with care, patience and attention to detail.
Speaking with Rashmika, I learnt that La Crème Ceylon began with something very simple—a lifelong passion for cooking and baking. Although she qualified as a management accountant, she always dreamed of building something of her own. The desserts on the menu weren’t created by following trends. They were recipes refined over the years, tested by family members and perfected until they were ready to be shared with everyone else.
I love stories like that.
Because every successful business starts with someone believing in an idea before anyone else does.
Walking around, I couldn’t help but think about how many birthdays, anniversaries and family gatherings must have featured one of La Crème Ceylon’s desserts. Their ice cream cakes have become a favourite for exactly those moments, and customers often praise not only the flavours but also the consistency, presentation and freshness that keep them coming back.
Consistency is underrated.
It’s easy to create something wonderful once.
It’s much harder to recreate that same experience every single day.
That’s what builds trust.
As someone who enjoys meeting the people behind brands, I always find myself more interested in the story than the product itself. In this case, the story was refreshingly simple. A passion for baking turned into a business, a family became the first taste testers, and homemade desserts slowly grew into a brand that many Colombo families now celebrate with.
That honesty is reflected in every bite.
As I finished my Bubble Gum ice cream, I realised it wasn’t really about the flavour anymore.
It was about the feeling.
For a few minutes, life slowed down. There were no deadlines, no phone calls and no distractions. Just a simple cup of homemade ice cream and a reminder that happiness often comes from the smallest moments.
So yes, Bubble Gum may have been created for children.
But I think adults need it just as much.
It reminds us not to lose our sense of wonder. Not to become so busy that we forget how to enjoy simple pleasures.
If you visit La Crème Ceylon, you should definitely try one of their famous ice cream cakes. Whether it’s Nutella, Biscoff, Caramel or Faluda, they’ve earned their reputation for a reason. And while you’re there, don’t overlook the Bubble Gum.
Because sometimes the simplest flavour carries the sweetest memories.
And perhaps that’s what La Crème Ceylon does best. It isn’t just serving desserts—it is quietly creating moments that people take home with them long after the last spoonful is gone.
