What it’s like to Date a Sri Lankan Girl

To start with, Sri Lankan girls are like the delicate balance between a moist konde kavum and a lunu dehi chutney – and if you are a one or you’re dating one, you’re bound to be familiar with the many stereotypes associated with it. Some of these ring true, clearer than the Parish bell that sounds at 5 PM on a Sunday, but some others raised questions. I took it up as my personal mission tackle them, one stereotype at a time.

I asked the local community on Reddit what it really is like to date a Sri Lankan girl, just so that my perspective isn’t biased, and I was pleasantly surprised at what I came across! Let’s take a look at a few myths and perspectives.

1. The ‘Gini Bombe’

I really don’t know why people assume that all Sri Lankan women are like atomic bombs waiting to blow up – could it be the weather? Hormones? Menopause? If you think they’re always waiting to have a go at you, it’s because they’ve spent seventeen hours being patient with everything else you’ve forgotten to do/promised to do and the last one is a hard blow.

2. The Green-Eyed Ginga

One user said that contrary to popular belief, dating a Sri Lankan girl was fairly easy – she was easy to talk to, honest, and open about anything. Here's a great clap back at hater who forever thinks that dating a local lamissi meant that she would hide a machete waiting to lunge at you no sooner your phone pings.

3. The Lacking Lola

I can honestly say that since February 2015, every girl knows what Mr. Grey’s playroom might include. She might feign ignorance because doesn’t want to be in that playroom with you.

4. The Theatre Show

If you ask any single male in Colombo why they're not dating (the serious kind), they would say that they didn't need ‘all that drama’. Drama, according to these wise men, is when your girlfriend asks you why you are still online on WhatsApp 45 minutes after you’ve said you’re going to sleep; it’s also when you ask him why he his making ‘b**b contact’ instead of eye contact with every woman; or, when she has been telling you about an ugly scenario in her office for nine straight weeks, and you ask her yet again who she was referring to.

5. The Social Queen

No, not all local women need to be constantly wooed with trips to Cinnamon Grand, gifts from Colombo Jewellery Stores, or trips to Bali. Some of us like to do these things for ourselves. One Redditor said the local girl he was dating was versatile enough and seemed to appreciate his company regardless of whether it was some fancy restaurant or a Saivar kadey. Relationship goals, in my opinion, take notes, boys!

6. The Great Roping (not a typo)

Darling, everyone wants commitment. When you order at the McDonalds drive-thru in Colpetty, you take a peek inside to make sure it’s a double beef patty with extra cheese before you even reach the wad of cash to pay them. You need to make sure that what you have is a hundred percent authentic. Perhaps these men live under a large rock nestled under a Jak tree because the memo where women too can opt for casual dating has clearly not reached them.

7. The Homemaker

Some women stay home after having kids because of the lack of support from their family circles, some others genuinely want to stay at home, exhausted of slaving away in corporate offices. If you think that you don’t want to date her because you will eventually be forced into marriage by her parents, and you will be left to carry the burden forever, look around – there are plenty of Sri Lankan women who opt to focus on a career than a family.

8. The Chauffeur

Many men are of the opinion that Sri Lankan women are ladies of leisure who want a white-gloved chauffeur picking them up from their waxing appointment, high tea dates, or shopping excursions, you’ve got it wrong. The PickMe Nano will pick you up from the ‘correct’ entrance at the promised four minutes when you frantically looking for your car keys.

9. The Bawse

'Sri Lankan girls are so bossy' is something I hear quite a lot when men complain about their SOs. What seems to be ironic is that they tell me the chief reason why they fell for her is that she reminded him of his mother. (Mic drop)

Ms. Confidential doesn't know to count till 10. Maybe she can add that to her "list of things" to watch out for when dating an Lankan girl. #Sad
