The main door is the most important area in a building. Both Vaastu and Feng Shui place great emphasis not only on the position but also on the auspicious timing for installing the door frame during construction. The main entrance holds a unique position compared to the other doors in the house; therefore, extra care is required to meet the specific requirements of this door.
The position of the main door is crucial because each compass direction has either exalted (positive) or debilitated (negative) orientations. Therefore, it is important to take extra care when designing the home to ensure that the main door is placed in an exalted position.
The front door is considered the mouth of the “Vaastu Purusha” (the protecting deity in Vaastu). Since the mouth is the largest orifice in the human body, the front door of a home should be large and inviting. This same philosophy is also emphasized in Feng Shui. The ideal height of a door should be approximately three times its width. If the door is found to be inadequate in size, immediate replacement is not necessary. Instead, the remedy lies in applying an artful decorative treatment around the margin of the main frame to make it stand out and become a prominent feature.
The main door frame must include a threshold (door sill) at the bottom. This serves as a safety measure against trespassing insects, rodents, and reptiles, which are otherwise invited by the gap—no matter how small—between the door shutter and the floor when a sill is not provided. The missing fourth side of the frame, which rests firmly on the floor, symbolizes fulfillment, wholeness, and stability. Therefore, a main door frame with four sides is considered very good, and it is even better if it has windows on either side.
It is considered auspicious if the entrance to the property and the main door of the house are on the same side. Conversely, it is considered inauspicious if the main door is on the opposite side of the property's entrance. Having a water body, underground tank, septic tank (sewage tank), or canal beneath the main entrance is taboo and is believed to cause financial loss and illness among the occupants.
Most homes display symbols around the main door to ward off bad luck and invite protection and positive energy into the house. Statues or images of elephants, or even round granite balls placed on either side of the entryway or pathway, are believed to prevent auspicious energy from rolling out of the home and to protect the main door and house from negative influences.
