I recently had the pleasure of attending the 'Yaalpana Santhai,' a two-day Jaffna food festival hosted by the iconic Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This gastronomic journey into Jaffna cuisine, which translates to 'Jaffna Market' in English, promised an authentic experience of the rich culinary heritage of Jaffna. I had the opportunity to savour an array of traditional dishes, enjoy captivating performances, and immerse myself in the vibrant culture of this fascinating region.

The setting for this culinary adventure was nothing short of enchanting. The Verandah Restaurant, nestled next to the famous 'Chequerboard' lawn, provided a picturesque backdrop for the event. With panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and a gentle sea breeze, it was the perfect place to embark on a gastronomic journey. The elegant ambience combined with the sea's soothing sounds set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.

The buffet featured a wide array of dishes that paid homage to Jaffna's culinary legacy. Executive Chef Aritha Fernando, with his team, crafted a menu that showcased the diverse and aromatic flavours of the region. One of the standout dishes was the Kaikuthal rice, a fragrant preparation that instantly transported me to the heart of Jaffna. The nandu sodhi, a spicy crab curry, was a testament to the coastal influences on Jaffna cuisine, and it left a delightful tingle on the taste buds. The succulent aatu erachi kulambu, a mutton curry that was both flavorful and tender. For vegetarians, the porittha valaikkai kulambu, an ash plantain curry, showcased the depth and variety of Jaffna's vegetarian offerings. The dosai, a beloved South Indian favourite, was a crispy and satisfying addition to the spread.

And what's a meal without dessert? The festival featured a selection of Northern sweetmeats, including the irresistible raya kesari, the classic Laddu, and more. Each sweet treat was a delightful conclusion to the culinary journey.

To complement the delectable dishes, traditional beverages such as Naddu Coffee and Nelli Juice were available. These drinks added an authentic and refreshing dimension to the dining experience, providing the perfect balance to the bold and spicy flavours of Jaffna cuisine.

What set the 'Yaalpana Santhai' apart was not just its culinary offerings but also the cultural richness it brought to the table. Throughout the evening, attendees were serenaded by the enchanting melodies of local music and treated to graceful performances by traditional dancers. The ambience was alive with the spirit of Jaffna, making it a truly immersive experience.
