Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo | October 10

Do you remember the last time someone really listened to you, without rushing you or judging you?

It probably felt like a weight lifting off of your shoulders. This Saturday, World Mental Health Day, Sri Lanka will come together at Viharamahadevi Park to give young people exactly that feeling.

Let's TALK & Walk is a simple idea: a safe space where young adults can say how they truly feel, be heard, and know that they are not alone. It is also a chance for all of us to understand why mental health deserves a place in our everyday conversations.

The need to create a safe environment is real. A review of Sri Lankan studies found that depression was most common among young people, affecting 39%. In another study of schooling adolescents, one in four showed clinically significant signs of depression, and more than half were struggling with significant distress. Behind each of those numbers is a young person who may be smiling at school and staying silent at home, afraid of being judged.

This year's World Mental Health Day theme, "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change," says it best. Change begins when we listen to those who have lived it. When we walk side by side on October 10, we are saying to every young person that their voice matters.

Your walk will help a child

Your Rs. 1,000 registration does more than get you a place on the walk. It helps create a safer world for young children through The Let's TALK Program, which teaches students to notice when someone is hurting, reach out, listen, connect them to help when needed, and keep in touch. The program was authored by Jetha Devapura and is currently being conducted with Australian government accreditation in Australia.

Small things that help

Talk to someone you trust, and when a friend opens up, simply listen. Get moving, because even a short daily walk lifts the mood. Rest well, and give yourself breaks from social media and heavy news. Asking for help takes courage, and it is never a weakness.

You are not alone
