I’ve known these guys for years, actually, since my childhood. So there’s something rather special about seeing them still making music, still laughing together and still celebrating the friendship that brought Voice.Print together in the first place.

Twenty years is a long time for any musical group, but what makes Voice.Print different is that their music has always come from the most basic instrument of all: the human voice.

Now, as they celebrate two decades with The Voice Print Legacy at The Shoppes at City of Dreams Sri Lanka on October 10, they’re not just looking back. They’re also looking forward, with the next generation taking the stage through the Voice Print Academy.

I’m really looking forward to seeing them perform. My only question is why don’t these guys perform MORE often?

So, for Buzz with Danu, I caught up with Voice.Print to talk about 20 years of friendship, music, memories, backstage madness and, of course, legacy.

1. Let’s start with the big one — what exactly is The Voice Print Legacy, and why now?

Twenty years ago, a few friends discovered you could make a whole band with nothing but voices. The Legacy is us celebrating that, and handing the microphone to the next generation. Why now? Because twenty years is a milestone, and because we’re finally old enough to use the word “legacy” without laughing.

2. Voice.Print has been around for years. What do you think has kept the sound alive?

Friendship first, harmony second. You can’t blend voices with people you don’t trust. And with no instruments, there’s nowhere to hide — so we’ve had to keep getting better.

3. When did you first realise that Voice.Print had become more than just a music group?

Probably when people started telling us our songs were part of their weddings, parties, road trips and even their worst days. The first international award helped too. But the real moment was realising we’d become family.

4. The word “legacy” is a big one. What does it personally mean to each of you?

“It’s not what we leave behind. It’s who we leave singing as Voice.Print.”
