So its a New Year and if you have got yourself a new smartphone or tablet, there are some apps and features that you need to get right now. A smartphone is only as good as the functionality it provides, so make sure you start off with the right kind of apps.

WhatsApp: This is one of the most popular communication apps available on the Android Play store.

Accounts are managed with the associated phone number, so you don’t need tedious FB or Google+ accounts. Users can text, share images, location, audio files, data files, over the internet. This not only makes texting easier but also cheaper.

The ability to quickly create groups on WhatsApp and keep in touch is a great feature but don’t be surprised if you start finding yourself inundated with message notifications.

Google Maps: While this app is standard on Android devices, many people under-estimate the value of Google Maps, it’s not just great in New York or London, but it does a pretty decent job in Colombo and other parts of the island.

While the app does not feature some of the advanced functionalities that are only available in other countries (traffic, transit, etc.), it is perfect for getting around without the need for consulting boring physical maps.

Google Keep: Google’s response to Evernote, this app allows users to quickly take notes, make lists, save pictures and even make audio notes on the go.

Importantly, all this information is also accessible via a Google account (on Google Drive, or Google Chrome).

Google Chrome: The world’s most widely adopted browser also has a mobile counterpart, which provides users great functionality on the go.

The frequent updates and familiarity UI, make this an ideal choice for a browser.

Avast : Mobile security is a growing requirement as phones become ever-more sophisticated and expensive.

The Avast mobile security app provides a variety of device-management and security features, including the location of a lost phone.

Users can also shut down their devices remotely if necessary.

Flipboard: This app makes reading a little more pleasurable. Providing feeds from different sources in a an easy to use UI.

The app is customisable to a great degree and comes packed with connectivity features that allow users to share their finds with others and sync across multiple devices.

Fake Call: You also probably made a lot of resolutions to avoid certain people and one way to get about that is the fake call app.

This allows users to feign a fake call from virtually anybody and make a quick exit. Users can also set timers to make things more subtle.
