App Review: Google Listen

Google has made an all-out effort to create a complete eco system for users. As a result, it has recently moved into online storage, music, movies, and now with Google Listen, podcasts.

The app, which is available for download from the Android Market (Google Play) allows users to "search, subscribe, download and stream podcasts." The app itself is quite easy to use and I had no trouble searching for podcasts ranging from TED secessions to online lectures.

Admittedly, I've only listened to a very narrow selection of podcasts but a quick search will show that the app features audio feeds for breaking news, entertainment, exercise, gardening, cleaning, etc. The vast range of feeds makes the app extremely appealing. You can set your phone to download the audio feeds when you go to bed and start the day with a fresh collection.

Interface

It is worth noting that the interface is quite good but you can get a little annoyed when you try to scroll through the podcast. Also, there is no feature to help you jump to an exact spot, which makes rewinding a bit frustrating.  Other than that, it is easy to skip tracks and fast forward/backward while it is playing. The entire interface comes loaded with a standard selection of controls, which is refreshing.

Google Reader Integration

Google Play also allows users to subscribe to their favourite feeds, and then manage all their subscriptions online via the Google Reader. The integration makes managing the entire thing simpler but then again you need to be familiar with Google Reader (remember the eco system!) if you want to make the best out of this. Personally, I found that it was just as easy to manage all my Google Play subscriptions without logging into Google Reader, and I don't think I'll be doing so any time soon.

Tips

Android users won't have to worry too much about space, because the podcasts are downloaded directly onto the SD card. However, do make sure that you download the apps only if you have  a Wi-Fi connection or if you have an unlimited broadband connection. Also, note that the app uses a lot of power so it is best to download the podcasts when the the phone is connected to a power outlet or computer.
