The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 : Reviewed

“Welcome to the 76th Annual Hunger Games”

The second half of Suzanne Collins' final Hunger Games book was just released in theatres last week and we caught the first glimpse.

Taking off from where Mockingjay Part 1 left off; Peeta choking the life out of Katniss (she really wasn’t expecting that), we are treated with one solid hour worth of sulking and plotting before the movie finally transcended into the actual ‘Hunger Games’. There’s Katniss Everdeen (Jenniffer Lawerence) working through her blatant dislike of being the just the face of hope and not in on all the action,(the Mockingjay Revolution has begun, people are bombing and sabotaging the Capital), there’s Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) working through some serious PTSD and confusion, there’s the best friend that created a whole love triangle in your head, Gale (Liam Hemsworth) brooding about Katniss and Peeta and then there’s President Coin, President Snow, gamemaker Plutarch and the rest of the entourage scheming and plotting their way to freedom for the great part of the movie.

But when the action came, it delivered. As they made their way to President Snow’s mansion they have to avoid ‘Pods’ (scary death machinery that unleashes its wrath when triggered) that has been planted all over the city in Snow’s attempt to have one final Hunger Games (and to kill them of course!).  The action was great and it continued in a series of events that just kept the hits coming. There might be a surprise or two that may or may not involve an underground sewer that had half the audience curled up in disgust and paranoia so the film definitely scored high in terms of giving the action we need.

Kudos for Jennifer Lawerence, who despite having evolved into more serious and more developed roles, still managed to carry on the persona of Katniss Everdeen to the very end.

As a whole, the beginning stagnated a bit, the middle really kicked it up and the end was all soft and mushy – which, according to the delight of those who read the books, was actually how the story is supposed to end. In the end, the movie delivered an overall satisfying finale. There were a few surprises that took me a couple of hours to get over but I walked away with that feeling of immense satisfaction you get when you reach a solid conclusion.

We also caught up with some of the other members of the audience to see what they had to say:
