Village living, naturally designed

Bordering the golden sandy beaches of Alankuda in Kalpitiya, Palagama Beach is a beautiful place to attune yourself with nature and experience the true beauty of coastal Sri Lanka. A mere two hour drive, on a good day, north of Colombo, Kalpitiya is one of Sri Lanka's lesser developed coastlines in comparison with its Southern and Eastern peers.

With the cerulean hued Indian Ocean on one side and the emerald green Puttalam Lagoon on the other, Kalpitiya is gaining popularity with both locals and foreigners alike as a new vacation destination be it for those seeking a respite from cold climates or as a weekend retreat by Sri Lankans.

Created by world renowned designer Cecil Balmond and his son John Balmond, Palagama Beach is beautifully designed to create sustainable living spaces, blending traditional Sri Lankan design with a contemporary feel. Comprising a mix of beach cabanas, garden cabanas and villas built on a sprawling property there is a sense of utmost privacy. Calm and serene, the silence is punctuated only by the sounds of waves breaking against the shore and birdsong.

One can choose from four beach cabanas, built with traditional Sri Lankan materials, each with its own signature style. Queen size beds, spacious bathrooms and locally created furniture complement the cabanas. The six garden cabanas offer an oasis of calm and tranquility as they are tucked away in the beautifully landscaped gardens of the property. Natural materials such as cajan and illuk infused with colourful and contemporary touches give these cabanas a unique look. In addition private verandahs and relaxation areas give it a homely feel. The three villas at Palagama Beach all have two bedrooms each complete with queen size beds. The interiors are cosy and all the design elements combined help to create an authentic living experience.

The restaurant at Palagama Beach offers a variety of dishes. Eastern and Western cuisine are created with equal aplomb. Seafood dishes rate highly on the menu, given its close proximity to the ocean. Nothing is too much trouble for the Chef, and with prior arrangement personal meal choices can be met.

Perfect for a long weekend to simply indulge in some rest and recuperation, Palagama Beach is well worth a visit.
