Most of us are now just moving from one screen to another. From the work computer to the phone to the TV. Sometimes, what you really need is to do something with your hands, to create something tangible, or just to get a little lost in a simple, satisfying task. Like when you were a kid and you had little hobbies where time would just melt away.

That feeling isn’t reserved for childhood. Picking up a hobby as an adult isn’t about becoming a master or a side hustle. It’s about finding a little pocket of joy for yourself. Here are a few ideas that are surprisingly easy to jump into and incredibly rewarding.

Knitting & Crocheting
No no before you think it is a hobby for grandmas, it is not! It is considered one of the coolest and most therapeutic hobbies these days. The repetitive motion is incredibly calming, almost meditative.

You can start with a simple scarf or tablemat, and before you know it, you’ve made something warm and wonderful with your own two hands.

How to get started - A single skein of medium-weight yarn and a pair of knitting needles or a crochet hook. YouTube is your best teacher.

Painting
I couldn’t paint to save my life as a child. But I am not too bad as an adult, and it has become one of my favourite things to do now. Forget being ‘good’. The goal here is to be ‘happy’. Mixing vibrant colours and creating art on a canvas is a fantastic way to de-stress and express yourself.

How to get started - A cheap set of acrylics or watercolours, a few brushes, and some heavy paper from the craft store. If you want to be a bit fancy, get a mini easel and a canvas to go with it. Cover your table with an old sheet and just go for it.

You can find all of the art supplies for affordable prices in Pettah.

Mixology
This hobby sounds super fun and cool. Making cocktails for your friends and family would be such a vibe. Start by perfecting just one drink, maybe the one you always order out. Once you've got that down, you'll feel like you've unlocked a secret life skill.

How to get started - A jigger for measuring, a cocktail shaker, and a few key ingredients for a drink you enjoy, like a classic mojito.

Baking
If you have an oven at home, this hobby could be something you should explore. Baking is a science and an art, requiring just enough focus to pull you out of your own head and help you relax. The measuring, the mixing, the waiting and finally, that incredible smell filling your house, it’s pure, delicious comfort.

How to get started - A simple recipe for cinnabons, cookies or brownies, basic measuring cups, a mixing bowl and an oven.

Puzzle Making
In our hyper-connected world, the simple, quiet focus of a jigsaw puzzle is a great way to disconnect. It’s just you, a thousand tiny pieces and the deeply satisfying click when pieces fit. It’s a no-pressure challenge for your brain.

How to get started - A puzzle with a compelling image (1000 pieces is a good start) and a table or tray you can dedicate to the project.

The real trick is to just start. Pick one, grab a beginner’s kit, and give yourself permission to be imperfect. This is your time to explore, create and maybe even get a little messy. Happy hobbying!
