This July, the heart of Colombo will throb to the rhythm of drums and the spirit of youth!  St. Bridget's Convent, Colombo 07, proudly presents "Sound of Drums," a highly anticipated band performance that promises to be an unforgettable night of rhythm, unity, and authentic power!

It's all happening on July 12th from 6.00 pm onwards at Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksha Theatre, where schools, along with their finest musicians, performers, and marching talent, will come together to light up the stage.

"Sound of Drums" is not just another band concert but a powerful statement, built on months of practice, dedication, and pure passion poured into perfecting every note and step. These students are telling a story, one filled with spirit and the kind of disciplined energy that only synchronized teams can produce.

We had the chance to hear directly from the band at the centre of it all, the Bridgeteens themselves. The girls opened up about their excitement, challenges, and what this journey has meant to them. We also heard from the teacher in charge, who reflected on the dedication it takes to pull off a show like this.

Swetha Fernando (Band Leader)

Q: What role do you play in the band, and how does it feel to contribute in that way?
A: As the band leader, I have the responsibility of guiding and supporting my team both during practice and performance by being a role model to everyone in the team. Along with that, I also play the Thammattama, a traditional Sri Lankan twin drum that adds rhythm, power, and energy to our music. Being able to lead the band and contribute through my instrument makes me feel proud and deeply connected to every part of our performance.

Q: What’s your favourite part about being in the band?
A: My favourite part is the bond we all share…like a second family. Being in the band has helped me grow in confidence, discipline, and teamwork. It also gives me a break from academics and allows me to express myself through music.

Q: What does it feel like performing in the St. Bridget’s Band Festival?
A: It’s an honour and an exciting opportunity. There’s a mix of nerves and adrenaline, but above all, pride. Being able to showcase our hard work in front of such a supportive crowd is a moment that can be cherished forever.

Q: What do you want the audience to feel when they watch your performance?
A: We want the audience to feel joy, connection, and admiration for the power of teamwork. We hope they leave with a smile and a sense of the spirit and passion we have poured into every note.

Q: What are you most looking forward to at this festival?
A: I’m looking forward to watching other school bands perform! It’s inspiring to see different styles and talents, and it’s a great chance to make new friends who share the same love for music.

Sahansa Weerasinghe (Assistant Band Leader)

Q: What role do you play in the band, and how does it feel to contribute in that way?
A: As the assistant band leader and a thammattama player, it feels deeply fulfilling to support the rhythm and unity of the group while also guiding and uplifting others. Contributing both musically and through leadership brings a strong sense of purpose, teamwork, and pride.

Q: What’s your favourite part about being in the band?
A: My favourite part about being in the Eastern Band is the strong sense of unity and cultural pride we share. Performing together creates unforgettable memories, and it feels amazing to represent our traditions through music and teamwork.

Q: What does it feel like performing in the St. Bridget’s Band Festival?
A: Performing at St. Bridget’s Band Festival feels incredibly exciting and rewarding. It’s a proud moment to showcase our hard work and talent on a big stage, surrounded by other passionate bands. The energy, support, and celebration of music make it a truly unforgettable experience.

Q: What do you want the audience to feel when they watch your performance?
A: When the audience watches our performance at the band festival, I want them to feel inspired, energized, and connected to the rhythm and spirit of our culture. I hope our music leaves a lasting impression and makes them feel the pride and unity we carry as a band.

Q: What are you most looking forward to at this festival?
A: I’m looking forward to seeing the creativity and talent of the other bands. It’s exciting to learn from their styles, connect with fellow musicians, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the festival.
