Dr Nirmala M. Pieris, a scientist by profession and storyteller by passion, announces the launch of her publication The Abeyesundere Family of Galle, the first in-depth account of the Abeyesundere family’s rich and enduring history. The official book launch will take place on 14 November 2025 at the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo.

This meticulously researched volume traces the origins and evolution of the Abeyesundere family, whose roots lie in the quiet village of Kumbalwella in the Galle District. At its heart is Pemyano William Abeyesundere, a respected ship chandler, landowner, and devout Roman Catholic, remembered for his philanthropy and civic leadership that made him a pillar of the Galle community.

Across eleven carefully structured chapters, Dr Pieris reconstructs the world in which William and his wife, Juana, lived, worked, and raised their nine children. The early chapters explore the family’s beginnings and William’s life, while later sections follow his children and their descendants over more than two centuries (1805–2025).

Drawing on archival records, family documents, and oral histories, The Abeyesundere Family of Galle extends beyond genealogy to present a family story, capturing the spirit of a bygone era, while celebrating the legacy of a family whose influence continues to this day.

“As a member of the Abeyesundere family myself, this book is both a personal and historical journey,” says Dr Nirmala M. Pieris. “In tracing the Abeyesundere lineage, I wanted to honour the lives and legacies of those who came before us, individuals whose values, faith, and quiet perseverance helped shape not only their descendants but also the communities around them.”

Whether you are part of the extended Abeyesundere family or simply someone drawn to stories of family and heritage, The Abeyesundere Family of Galle offers a heartfelt narrative that bridges generations and celebrates the enduring threads of family history.
