A Time for Renewal, Harmony and Positive Change

Feng Shui, the ancient Oriental art of space alignment, is based on the principle of creating harmony between people, their surroundings and the natural environment. The traditional practice seeks to encourage the smooth and balanced movement of Qi (Chi)—the vital energy believed to flow through living beings and their surroundings.

In Feng Shui, beneficial and vibrant energy is traditionally referred to as Sheng Chi, while harsh, stagnant or disturbing energy is described as Sha Chi. Creating an environment that encourages Sheng Chi and minimises Sha Chi is considered an important aspect of maintaining a harmonious home or workplace.

The Full Moon has fascinated humanity for centuries. In many traditional cultures, it has been regarded as a time of heightened energy, completion and reflection. Within certain Feng Shui and spiritual practices, the Full Moon can be used as an opportunity for cleansing, renewal, intention-setting and positive transformation.

Rather than viewing the Full Moon simply as an astronomical event, it can also serve as a monthly reminder to pause, reflect upon our lives and consciously create space for new possibilities.

Cleansing the Environment
One of the simplest Feng Shui practices is to declutter and refresh the home. Begin with the main entrance, which is traditionally regarded as the primary gateway through which Qi enters the home. Remove unnecessary objects, broken items and accumulated clutter. Clean the entrance thoroughly and, where possible, allow fresh air and natural light to enter.

The bedroom and study area can also benefit from decluttering. Remove unused belongings, old papers and objects that create a feeling of heaviness or disorder. A clean environment can contribute to a greater sense of calm and organisation.

Harnessing Positive Intentions
The Full Moon can be an appropriate time to review personal goals. Think carefully about what you wish to accomplish in the coming weeks and write down clear, realistic and positive intentions. These may relate to career, relationships, education, financial discipline, personal development or spiritual growth.

Visualisation can also be incorporated into this practice. Instead of merely wishing for an outcome, imagine yourself taking the practical steps necessary to achieve it.

Release Anger and Negativity
Traditional Full Moon practices often emphasise emotional release. Avoid unnecessary arguments, anger and confrontations. Instead, use this period to let go of resentment and consciously cultivate forgiveness, compassion and goodwill.

Sending thoughts of healing, love and forgiveness towards family, friends and even people with whom we have experienced difficulties can help create a more peaceful state of mind.

Balance the Five Elements
A simple Feng Shui enhancement is to observe the balance of the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water within the home. Plants can represent Wood, lighting and candles Fire, natural stones or ceramics Earth, metal objects Metal, and appropriate water features or imagery Water. The objective is not to add everything indiscriminately, but to create a visually pleasing and balanced environment.

Create a Peaceful Space
On the Full Moon evening, spend a few quiet moments in a clean and peaceful part of the home. Meditation, prayer, contemplation or deep breathing can help settle the mind. If incense or fragrances are used, they should be mild, and the area should remain properly ventilated.

Ultimately, Feng Shui is not simply about objects, directions or remedies. It is about awareness, balance and our relationship with the environment around us. The Full Moon offers a beautiful symbolic opportunity to cleanse our surroundings, release what no longer serves us, clarify our intentions and welcome positive change.

The Moon may illuminate our surroundings, but it is our thoughts, choices and actions that illuminate the path ahead.
