Indian dining in bustling Nugegoda

Nugegoda seems to have a number of interesting eateries ranging from the many kottu kades to fast food outlets like McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut and Dominos and not forgetting the various Sri Lankan  Chinese restaurants and of course the latest addition, Pasta Hut which serves delightful Italian food. And if Indian food is what you are looking for and you reside in the area, I’d recommend you try out Namasté Indian Restaurant on Highlevel Road.

The restaurant serves a number of dishes which are essentially north Indian based but they also have a number of south Indian dishes on their menu. While for those wanting something different, they even have a few East Asian dishes to choose from.

Namasté opened its doors to customers just over five months ago and if you pass the restaurant during the evenings you’d notice a number of vehicles parked outside the restaurant, while their take away counter is seems to be bustling!

The place is clean – which is always a bonus. Apart from the main dining area they also have VIP Rooms and the option of dining underneath the stars. The restaurant has a number of ‘offers’; this month's ones include Ulundu Vadai, Special Dosai, Mutton Soup and Kesari each for very reasonable prices.

I am not a huge fan of Buriyani, to be honest, but I must say the idea of three types of meat in a Buriyani was an interesting idea. This is what Namasté calls the Namasté Special Buriyani which has chicken, prawns and cuttlefish. The rice was quite tasty along with the well-cooked prawn and cuttlefish.

However the generous portion of chicken didn’t really compliment the Buriyani as it tasted boiled rather than cooked with the rice and the rest of the spices. I was told by the management that India is home to varied styles of Buriyani and this is one that their head chef, Surasi specialises in, which is a north Indian variant.

I have a definite soft spot for Naan and I must say they do a fantastic Butter Naan which can be accompanied by their delicious Chicken Tikka Masaala. The Naan was perfectly cooked and the Chicken Tikka Masaala was delicious.

The Namasté Special Dosai is also well worth the money and tastes quite good. The dosai is stuffed with chicken, cuttlefish and prawns and served with chutney and sambar.

They also have a number of desserts on offer but if you’d like to go with a  complete Indian experience, I’d suggest their Gulabjamun, which was too sweet for my taste buds but still very tasty.

Their Kesari however, suited my palate more as it wasn’t too sweet and also had just the right amount of ghee and flaked almonds.

All in all, my experience at Namasté was a good one and I’d recommend it to anyone in the area as it is also relatively reasonably priced and you are more often than not, going to be satisfied with the meal you have while the service is also very pleasant.
