When Fairytales Don’t Quite Work Out…

Anonymous Productions will bring back the bold and witty stage production Fairytales Suck! , marking the return of a show that blends humour, satire, and social reflection, with the creative talent of Sajini Shabbir, Thushara Hettihamu, Kumudini Perera-David, Joshua Perera, Ruchith Ranasinghe, Stefan Shabbir and Angelo Pereira.

Sometimes the best stories are the ones that challenge the stories we grew up believing. Fairytales Suck! is exactly that kind of show, bold, witty, a little rebellious, and very real.

I caught up with Angela Pereira to talk about why this production is back, what audiences can expect, and why sometimes… fairytales really do suck.

Let’s start with the obvious question. Fairytales Suck! That title alone already sounds like trouble. What’s the idea behind it?

Exactly! It’s meant to make people pause and think. We grew up with all these fairytale ideas about love, success, gender roles and life in general. The show looks at those expectations with humour and satire, asking whether those stories actually match reality.

So it’s funny, but also making a point?

Absolutely. Comedy is the vehicle, but the themes are very real. We look at relationships, social expectations, and the pressure people, especially women, face because of these “perfect story” narratives.

The show has quite a strong creative team behind it. Tell me about the people involved.
It’s been a wonderful collaboration. The production brings together the creative minds of Sajini Shabbir, Thushara Hettihamu, Kumudini Perera-David, Joshua Perera, Ruchith Ranasinghe, Stefan Shabbir, and me, with each person bringing their own perspective and energy to the script and performance.

Theatre always has that magic of teamwork. What has the rehearsal process been like?

Angela: Very layered. We started with smaller rehearsals focusing on scenes and characters, exploring timing and dialogue. Then gradually everyone came together for full ensemble rehearsals where the movement, music, staging and comedy all began to come alive.

But this production also connects to something bigger than just theatre, right?

Yes, and that’s very important to us. The performances are part of Sevalanka Foundation’s Embrace Equity initiative, which supports women entrepreneurs. The show opens the door for conversations about women’s challenges in business and leadership.

So the theatre becomes a starting point for dialogue?

Exactly. After the performances, there will be discussions and engagement sessions. These insights will feed into a mentoring hackathon and a 12-month incubator program designed to support women-led businesses.

I love that art meeting action. Finally, what should audiences expect when they come to watch the show?

Expect to laugh, maybe cringe a little, and definitely think. It’s entertaining, witty, and full of sharp observations about life and relationships. Most importantly, it’s a reminder that sometimes the stories we’ve been told aren’t the ones we have to live by.
