This special event is more than just a performance. It marks the first time these students, hailing from across Sri Lanka from Mihinthale, Vavuniya, Tangalle, Matara, Anuradhapura, Hatton, Kurunegala and beyond will perform on stage as a united band. With 12 students playing various instruments, it’s a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, passion, and belief.
Renowned musician and mentor *Melantha Perera, who spearheaded this initiative, calls it “the show of the decade.*” Reflecting on the journey, he shares:
“It was challenging at first especially having to teach them online during the first two years. But thanks to the support of the MJF Centre in Moratuwa, we’ve been able to meet once a month for the past six months. That helped us build real musical chemistry.”
Melantha had to start from the basics, training some students from scratch before moulding them into a cohesive band. “We were lucky,” he says, “because many of my friends stepped in and donated instruments. That made online teaching much more effective.”
Despite the challenges, the journey has been deeply rewarding.
“Looking back, I’m proud. There were many obstacles, but overcoming them has made the success even sweeter. I don’t want to reveal too much about what we’ll perform but I promise, you’ll love it.”
The concert will also feature the release of two original songs. One is a Sinhala track titled “අපි සිනා සෙනවාවා” (We Smile On), which has become the group’s unofficial theme. It was written by one of the talented student band members, with Melantha planting the initial idea and *Samudra* crafting the lyrics.
The second is an English composition written by Melantha himself. Inspired by a conversation where he asked the students how they dream, the song explores their inner world—full of light, imagination, and hope.
“That discussion moved me deeply,” Melantha says. “It made me realize how limitless the human spirit is, even in darkness. I believe this song will resonate with the world.”
As Melantha puts it: “Seeing is healing and this concert is about vision beyond sight.”
Let us come together to support these incredible young musicians. Let us witness them shine brighter than the light. Wishing them all the best on this luminous journey.
