Directed by theatre veteran Jehan Aloysius, who not only helms the production but also embodies the central character, Mr Scrooge, ‘A Christmas Carol – The Musical’ marked a splendid beginning to Colombo’s Christmas celebrations this year. Based on one of Charles Dickens’ most famous tales, the adaptation brought the story to life on stage with a meticulously curated score and music also crafted by Aloysius, whose influence resonates throughout the performance.
The production opens with a grand ensemble number, illuminated under the vibrant lights of the Lionel Wendt Theatre, instantly showcasing the richness of Sri Lanka’s theatrical talent. From seasoned performers like Dr Sean Amarasekara to promising new faces, the production set a high benchmark, evident in the audience’s continuous delight at the exceptional acting and singing.
Structured in two acts, the play follows Mr Scrooge, a self-proclaimed enemy of Christmas, as he is guided through his past, present and future by a trio of restless spirits. Many of the performers take on multiple roles, showcasing an impressive range as they switch effortlessly between characters. Their chemistry on stage is undeniable, with every exchange, expression and movement feeling intentional and alive, keeping you rooted in your seat and holding your breath for what might unfold next.
One might expect the narrative to revolve entirely around the rise, fall and redemption of Scrooge, and while his journey remains the emotional backbone of the play, it’s remarkable how many other characters manage to steal the spotlight in their own subtle ways. From the ever-loud and endearing Mr Cratchit, whose booming presence fills the stage with warmth, to Belle, whose sweet and melodious voice softens even the hardest hearts, each character brings a unique texture to the story.
Scrooge’s nephew, portrayed by Dion Nanayakkara, is another standout. His natural charm and infectious energy lift every scene he steps into, and his ability to slip seamlessly into multiple roles throughout the play speaks to his versatility as a performer. These supporting characters don’t just frame Scrooge’s transformation; they enrich it and offer glimpses into the world he once dismissed and ultimately grew to understand. Through their performances, the production becomes more than a retelling as it becomes a holistic performance of personalities, emotions and moments that linger long after the final bow.
The production’s bold and eccentric set transitions carry the audience through time, and Aloysius’ thoughtful direction offers a fresh re-imagining of a timeless story. Beneath the spectacle, the emotional core remains, which is a reminder that the true essence of Christmas extends far beyond gifts and glitter. It is about community, compassion and showing up for one another, a message that feels especially poignant as Sri Lanka continues to recover from a recent natural disaster.
As audience member Tasneem beautifully put it, “It’s the cheer we needed”, while Aneesha exclaimed, “The set design and the costumes were unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It was truly a spectacular show, one of the best Colombo has seen in a while”.
After a five-day run, the play stands as a small but meaningful symbol of hope for the Sri Lankan community, a gentle promise that brighter days lie ahead this holiday season.
