A craft fair and a hub of creativity that is soon to become the nucleus of Sri Lanka’s craft community, “Craft-holic”, the brainchild of Ruth Wijesinghe, an entrepreneur herself who also runs ‘Shekel Creations’ - a venture that sells unique handmade greeting cards for everyday expression of gratitude and love; is geared to set a distinct trend.

Ruth recalls she “had it in mind for a couple of years” and despite the doubts of a probable wavering response, she decided to “give it a shot” and said she has been greatly encouraged by the positive response she has received ever since. The need to create a “craft community” in Sri Lanka is what sparked ‘Craft-holic’, she continued to say, and give home-based crafters the exposure they rightfully deserve.

The venue will house over 20 stalls, with talented artists and skilled crafters from around Colombo; some of those who have already set foot in the crafting industry and others who are about to embark on a creative journey; launching a line of products that cover Textile, Paper, Fashion, Decorative and Functional Craft.

Speaking to a few Crafters, Manique Fernando owner of “Sentiments Gallery”, a home-based business venture that has products ranging from thread woven jewellery to hand embroidered cushions, bags, customized wall hangers and lampshades, said she was “very excited to be a part of Craft-holic” as it is the first of its nature. Chirandinithi Medis, who runs “-Cut, Craft, Create-”, yet another home-based business venture that features handmade greeting cards, customized wedding cards, photo frames, party décor and anything related to themed events said, “It’s inspiring to be a part of this because as opposed to marketing products in a commercial environment where there’s competition, Craft-holic creates a platform for both the appreciation of items and marketing. Hopefully this will spark a trend because there are so many part-time crafters out there.” Melanie, who specializes in dream catcher accessories and custom-made charm bracelets said, “Craft-holic will bring in a different crowd in comparison to other craft related fairs. Very excited to be a part of this.”

The fair will also open doors for sharing of ideas, the learning of new crafting methods and purchasing a variety of hand-crafted items. With all things handmade, from cards to gifts, jewellery, bags and home décor, Craft-Holic will no doubt be a feast for craft enthusiasts of all ages.  Not just craft enthusiasts, but all those who value anything handmade, all those looking to buy customized gifts to celebrate a special occasion or person, this call is for you.

Head over to the Dutch Burgher Union on Saturday the 6th of June from 9.30 p.m. – 7 p.m. and step in to an expanse of endless inspiration and creativity. Look out for exciting offers and chances to win exciting prizes!
