Trent Reznor has confirmed new Nine Inch Nails material is "in the works"

The 'Closer' hitmaker retired the group - of which he is the sole permanent member - after a 20th anniversary tour in 2009 but has now admitted he may release new songs under the name in the future.

He told Rolling Stone magazine: "All signs point to yes... Yeah, there will be new music. There are some things in the works.

"Yeah, if it feels right, it's a possibility. I never said that that wasn't going to happen, just that it couldn't go on as it was.

"Stay tuned. We'll see what happens here."

Since ending Nine Inch Nails, Trent has been working with How to Destroy Angels - alongside his wife Mariqueen Maandig, composer Atticus Ross and Rob Sheridan - and producing music for films including 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' and 'The Social Network'.

Speaking last year, the 47-year-old singer said he did not think of Nine Inch Nails as "dead" but just away temporarily.

He said: "Nine Inch Nails is not dead by any means, but all the touring and record writing has been thrown off for a little bit."

Nine Inch Nails last released an album in 2008.
