The work of 18th century composer Mozart was fused with those of the King of Pop, on the 29th of October, at the St. Joseph's College Auditorium. Musical Mystique featured the St.Cecelia' s Choir of St.Joeseph's College and the Old Joes’ Choir at their finest.

The Old Joe’s Choir took to the stage straight after in deliberate contrast giving the performance a more contemporary feel with hits Moon River, Don’t stop believing and I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. Their vocal skills although flawless, could’ve made a greater impact with more energy on in their performance.

The variation of the evening’s segments catered to the most diverse musical tastes of the audience. Not wandering too far from home St. Cecilia’s Choir took on “Kamatha” the amazing operatic composition by Maestro Rohana Weerasinghe. The choir also showed off their linguistic skills with pieces in Tamil and Hindi. The completion of this segment meant the audience joining in the fun, singing along to a few golden oldies.

Thanks to the growing popularity of television shows such as Glee, which highlights the translation of popular modern songs into harmonious masterpieces as well as “mash-ups”, it is no surprise that St. Cecilia’s Choir attempted the same. From popular hits by Michael Jackson to Motown’s best, these youngsters, especially the soloists displayed remarkable showmanship not in the least intimidated by the large numbers seated before them.

On the downside however, the transition from head to chest voice and other vocal stylings could’ve been better mastered among the soloists, as some sounded very uncomfortable with the popular repertoire.

Setting aside a moment for tête-à-tête with St. Cecilia’s Choir director of 15 years,Francis De Almeida, he spoke of the improving quality of the school’s choir, elaborating on the magnitude of enthusiasm expressed by the students as well as the support from the parents’ committee with rehearsals spanning over 3 months to be certain they sounded their best for the event: an admirable quality, he says.

De Almeida says "Music is a universal language with different styles, different traits and different abilities. If one doesn’t move forward with the changing of times, one becomes inadequate in performance." As an educationalist he draws from the talents within the student and allows them the freedom to choose their own “pop” repertoire with the necessary guidance.

The 66 member choir draws from the influences of the world and translates it to harmonious magic, presenting it in a package of soul stirring, heartwarming musical delights. They concluded the spectacular evening with an Italian masterpiece “Con TePartiro” as they bid farewell to the crowd.
