This year’s Young Soloists Concert of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka which is being sponsored by the HSBC for the 17th year in succession, features four young soloists performing in a delightful programme of music. It will be held on the 28th of July at the Ladies’ College hall.

The concert begins with the viola concerto in D written in classical style by the virtuoso performer, Karl Stamitz in 1774. It will be performed by Mangala Abeysekera who is a pupil of Ananda Dabare.

Mr. Dabare will be conducting the SOSL at this concert. The concert ends with Louis Page performing Chopin’s poetic second piano concerto, a work inspired by unrequited love. It was first performed by the composer at the age of 20 years, in Warsaw in 1830.

In between the two instrumental works are some of the best loved operatic arias covering a wide variety of emotions and themes, performed by the two vocal soloists, Thivanthi Perera  (soprano) and Laknath Seneviratne (Bass).

Thivanthi Perera who is a voice pupil of Naomi Guneratne will be performing Mozart’s ‘Dove Sono’ from ‘The marriage of Figaro’, Puccini’s ‘Musetta’s Waltz’ from ‘La Boheme’  and Dvorak’s ‘Song to the moon’ from ‘Rusalka’.

Laknath Seneviratne who is a pupil of Menaka de Fonseka will be performing Mozart’s ‘Se vuol Ballare’ from the ‘Marriage of Figaro’ and ‘Der vogelfanger bin ich ja’ from the ‘Magic Flute’, and the ‘Toreador song’ from Bizet’s ‘Carmen’.

Tickets for the concert are available from the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
