Whoever says that Halloween is just a holiday for the children has obviously never seen how a rock n roll band does it. Let the children have their costumes and candy! It’s that time of the year when the rock music lover get to leave the safety nets of their homes, don on their most outrageous alter-egos and rock out to some heavy metal.
Come the 28th of October, The New Wave of Sri Lankan Heavy Metal will be hitting the stage with the concert ‘Electric Funeral,’ a heavy metal tribute to that spookiest of seasons. The
concert featuring CryWolf, Angel Down, Circus Cult, R.A.G.E, Ethereal and Prabodhya Fernando, will take place at The New Town Hall Theater. Gates will be open from 5.00pm onwards.
“There’s really no other music that speaks Halloween more so than heavy metal,” explains Lahiru Aravinthakumar of Angel Down. “I mean it’s nothing to do with the fantastic stereotypes about metal heads that people seem to cook up, say for example that we’re all devil worshippers and have the number 666 tattooed on our chests. But it’s to do with the fact that heavy metal and rock and roll has always been a very theatric and expressive form of music. If you’ve seen concerts of bands like Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper and the special effects and theatrics they incorporate in their live shows, you’ll know why our eyes light up when we get to play a Halloween themed concert.”
“And speaking of stage shows and theatrics, this is probably the most ambitious concert we’ve attempted in our careers so far,” adds Shashika Madhusanka the lead guitarist of CryWolf. “One of the reasons we love playing the type of music we play is because it’s such a perfect platform for us to give people an experience. And a huge part of that experience comes down to the props, stage design and lighting designs we incorporate in our shows. And we’ve got to really hand it to our production crew led by Kurt Janitha, our lighting and stage set designer, who have been slaving away night and day to make sure that we get to play our music on a stage that does the theme justice.”
Jimmy a.k.a the Jester from Circus Cult ads, “one of the best things for us rock bands about Halloween concerts is that it really lets us go to town with the covers. While I know that all of the bands performing at Electric Funeral are strong advocates of promoting original Sri Lankan music, I also know that we’re all looking forward to pulling out the classics like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath at the gig. And people love that. It’s nice to have a listen to music that gives you chills down your spine once in awhile you know.”
Electric Funeral is a production of Show Biz and tickets for the gig priced at Rs. 400 are available with all crew members and at The Basement Clothing Store (located within the Bernard Botejues Business Park).
