The event got underway @ Park Street Mews, last Saturday eve with the opening song “How Great Thou Art”. Backstage comprising of 8 guys who are extremely passionate in doing what they love doing, music! They performed music ranging from 70’s to the 90’s.
It was understood that the aim of putting the show together was simply to say their “Thank You” to everyone who made it possible for their lead vocalist Hirushka Fernando to hit the 3rd spot at Yes Superstar - Season 2.
The 1st half showcased the talent which Sri Lanka recognized earlier this year. Featuring the top 6 of Yes Superstar, who performed and of course with the backing of the soothing music provided by the band itself. Providing the fans and loved ones with the music, it was a chilled out and relaxed, as indicated with their “chill-out” tie loosened outfits.
The Highlight of the evening was surely when the band performed “Circle of Life” from the movie Lion King which excited the audience. Other covers like, Lady Soul, How Far is Heaven and Part Time Lover was performed by Hirushka Fernando. The 1st half came to an end with Hirushka and Dulani, the winner of Yes Superstar - Season 2, performing “Sometimes When we touch” by Dan Hill.
With the short break in between the show and the change of outfits for the band, they were back center stage with the spot light on them. The band was surely “partying” as they jammed away few of the best dancing rhythms. The sound of “La Bamba” was sure to catch the attention of the 300+ audience, where it led a few on their feet moving to the beat.
Other highlights were covers of “summer of ’69” by the legendary Brain Adams and “Nadee Ganga” by our very own Chitral Somapala which catered to the rock music fans, the lead singer went on to perform one of their own original called Oba dutu mul dawase, which was written way back during their school days.
Also it was a nice gesture by the band to have their founder member Chathuranga back on stage with to play lead to the CCR hit Proud Mary. Performers seem to have built the trend of keeping the best to the last, Backstage stored all they got for the end, music which suits any Sri Lankan best, “Baila”, a little bit of Mathara Baila and sounds of Oje Ojeye, Rambari and Hirushka singing I Write the Songs by Barry Manilow was the climax of the show.
The nicely decorated venue saw the banners of the Main sponsors for the event Abans & the Co-Sponsor Show to Show. Audio visuals done by Dynamic AV Technologies, Yamaha coming in as the Musical partner providing the band with their instruments, graphics and backdrops powered by RH Studios along with Yes FM being Media sponsor. Moreover the show stayed gelled with Daniel Thambyrajah providing his interactive skills-compeering the show.
The young band which started little over 3 years ago aimed to ensure that everyone present had a good time wherever. It comprises of Hirushka Fernando the lead vocalist, Melantha Fernando the leader on vocal and rhythm guitar, Shane Godwin on vocals, Chinthu Viswakula on vocals and bass, Shawishka Fernando on lead guitar, Suren de Mel on keyboard, Lahiru de Silva on drums and Rajind Siva on percussions and chips in with drumming from time to time. The band provides all music genres, positioning themselves as a Retro Band while making them available to perform at all occasions.
