SURIYA, the iconic Sri Lankan lifestyle brand known for handcrafted furniture, artisan textiles, and soulful design, celebrates an incredible 25-year journey. From its humble beginnings to becoming a globally respected name, SURIYA’s story is one of passion, purpose, and divine guidance. We sat down with its founder, Ruwanmali Jayasinghe, who was recently selected as a winner at the Business World International Awards 2025.

1. Can you tell us the story of how Suriya came to be from a passion project to a full-fledged lifestyle brand?

SURIYA began in 1998 as a nonprofit initiative. I started by connecting with rural communities, offering skill-building opportunities so they could earn a sustainable income. The idea was simple: help people help themselves. With the turn of the millennium, I opened our first store in 2000. That was the moment SURIYA became more than charity; it became a brand with soul.

2. What inspired you to transition from an air hostess with Air Lanka to an entrepreneur?

My time at Air Lanka opened my eyes to the world, but my heart always belonged to Sri Lanka. I knew I wanted to build something that would honour my roots and give back to my people.

3. What does the name “Suriya” signify?
“Suriya” means sun in Sinhalese-  a symbol of strength, warmth, and hope. I chose it because I wanted the brand to bring light into people’s lives, just as the sun touches everything it shines on.

4. What was the most difficult part of starting your own business?

Starting from scratch with no formal business background was a challenge, but the biggest challenge was overcoming doubt. Faith and resilience helped me press through. My vision came to reality with God's grace and wisdom.

5. How do you ensure each piece remains true to its cultural roots while also appealing to modern tastes?

We always begin with the original, traditional technique.  Then we layer in refined forms and contemporary function. We never dilute our heritage; we elevate it for today’s world.
Our work is not mass-produced. We mostly use reclaimed wood, natural materials, and blend cultural inspiration with modern elegance.

6. Tell us more about the product range. What are some standout or signature pieces?

Our personalised wooden furniture ranges from Mahogany to teak with many colour selections, handcrafted carved wood work, handwoven textiles, and handmade jewellery, as well as linen lamps are our signature pieces. Each design carries a piece of Sri Lanka, crafted with soul and purpose.

7. What is the creative process like behind your made-to-order furniture?

It begins with a conversation, understanding the customer’s space and story. Then we sketch, refine, prototype, and finally build. It’s collaborative, personal, and deeply fulfilling. This process allows us to create a beautiful relationship with our clients while delivering our best.

8. How has the support from local communities shaped the success of Suriya?

Community is the foundation of SURIYA. Without the love and support of our people, from artisans to customers, we wouldn’t be here. They’ve believed in us, stood with us, and grown with us.

9. How do you strike a balance between being a business and a movement for social impact?

By staying rooted in purpose. Profit is necessary, but impact is non-negotiable. Every decision is made with people in mind, how it uplifts, how it serves, how it gives back.

10. Why was now the right time to expand into international markets?
After 25 years, we’re ready. Our systems are strong, our artisans confident, and the global appetite for ethical, soulful design has never been higher. It’s time for the world to experience what Sri Lanka has to offer.

11. What has the reception been like as you begin exporting Sri Lankan-inspired designs globally?

It’s been beautiful. International clients appreciate the story, the quality, and the uniqueness. Our pieces are finding homes in places we never imagined.

12. What advice would you give to future entrepreneurs?
Start small, but start with purpose. Let your vision be bigger than fear. Trust your voice, stay anchored in your values, and don’t be afraid to be different. Never forget: your faith will take you further than your plans.

13. What’s your long-term vision for Suriya, and how do you hope it continues to evolve?

I see SURIYA growing into a global movement - a platform for artisan communities, a design house for conscious living, a voice for sustainability and culture. Beyond that, I hope we continue to be a blessing to others, empowering more families and leaving a legacy of light.

14. Are there any final words you would like to share with us about your journey?
My walk with Jesus has sharpened my skills, refined my wisdom, and carried me with grace through every season of this journey. If not for His hand, none of this would be possible. My spirit wouldn’t be at peace without giving glory to His name for leading and guiding me. I know this is just the beginning, with everything God has done so far,  I know the best is still to come.
