In a groundbreaking appointment, Sri Lankan creative visionary Kosh Hewage has been named the Deputy Director of Miss Universe Bahrain and Miss Universe Egypt, marking a historic moment as the first Sri Lankan to hold a leadership role in an international pageant representing another country. Known for his experience as a celebrity stylist and CEO of The Agency Sri Lanka, Hewage now brings his creative flair and leadership acumen to a global platform. We sat down with him to talk about his vision, responsibilities, and how his journey from styling Barbie dolls to commanding international stages came full circle.
Q: Congratulations on your appointment. How does it feel to be named Deputy Director of Miss Universe Bahrain and Egypt?
I’m extremely happy and truly honoured. Being the first Sri Lankan to be part of an international franchise at this level is not just a personal achievement but a proud moment for Sri Lanka. I’ve been warmly welcomed into the House of Yugen family by Josh Yugen, Ian, and the entire team—it’s been incredible. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a platform that celebrates the strength, beauty, and voice of Arab and Islamic women on a global stage.
Q: What does this new role mean to you personally and professionally?
It’s a milestone, absolutely—but more than that, it’s a responsibility. This isn’t just a title; it’s a commitment to excellence and integrity. The Miss Universe brand is globally recognised, and with it comes the expectation to lead with vision and purpose. Personally, it’s fulfilling a lifelong dream. Professionally, it’s an opportunity to shape a platform that empowers the next generation of Arab women.
Q: How do you plan to bring your background as a celebrity stylist into this role?
While I won’t be styling the candidates myself, my experience does influence the creative direction. I bring an understanding of branding, aesthetics, and cultural sensitivity. Our team is incredibly talented, and my goal is to help guide a vision that respects regional traditions while presenting something fresh and globally competitive. It’s about blending authenticity with elegance and modernity.
Q: What is your vision for Miss Universe Bahrain under your leadership?
We’re aiming to find a woman who’s not just beautiful, but bold, intelligent, and compassionate—a woman of substance who can inspire others and drive change. Our goal is to turn the spotlight toward fearless Arab women who are proud of their heritage and bold in their dreams. This platform isn’t just about a crown; it’s about amplifying a cause.
Q: Pageantry in the Middle East faces unique challenges. How will you balance innovation with cultural representation?
Thoughtful planning, cultural respect, and authenticity are key. One example is our decision to include the ‘Burkini’ during the swimsuit segment, honouring modesty without compromising empowerment. Every choice- from wardrobe to messaging- is intentional. We want Arab and Islamic women to feel celebrated and represented without diluting their identity.
Q: What sets Miss Universe Bahrain apart on the global stage?
Our diversity and unity are our greatest strengths. We’re a team of creatives and professionals from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, UAE, India, and Bahrain working together with one goal—to bring Bahrain to the forefront of global pageantry. Shereen Ahmed, our reigning queen, is a perfect example of what we stand for: grace, advocacy, and authenticity.
Q: How have your styling experiences prepared you for this leadership role?
My 15-year career in fashion taught me how to work with people, manage talent, and stay adaptable. Running The Agency Sri Lanka helped me grow as a mentor and strategist. Each project sharpened my ability to think creatively while navigating real-world challenges. These experiences built the foundation I now stand on.
Q: Can you share a bit about your personal journey?
It all began with designing outfits for my sister’s Barbie dolls and staging mock pageants in our living room! I was captivated by the blend of poise, beauty, and impact that pageants offered. That passion led me to study Management at Plymouth University via NSBM, which helped me merge creativity with business strategy. From winning ‘Designer of the Year’ to showcasing at the Asian-European Fashion Week in Paris, every step was a stepping stone. Becoming National Director for Miss Earth Sri Lanka in 2021 was a turning point. Now, this new chapter with Miss Universe Bahrain feels like a dream realised.
Q: How do you see the fashion and beauty industry evolving—and where do you fit in that shift?
Globally, fashion has become more than aesthetics—it’s about identity, inclusivity, and activism. But in Sri Lanka, we’re still navigating traditional perceptions. I see myself as a bridge, bringing global standards and progressive ideas to a developing market. I want to help local talent rise, break stereotypes, and redefine what it means to be stylish and powerful in today’s world.
Q: What message do you hope your appointment sends to aspiring creatives?
Believe in yourself, but don’t rush the process. Stay kind, work hard, and support others. Collaboration always beats competition. Learn from every experience and be generous with what you know. Most importantly, never compromise your authenticity—that’s where your true power lies.
Q: Are there any exciting projects coming up for Miss Universe Bahrain?
Yes! We have several mini pageants, a charity gala, and the crowning ceremony—all in the works. While I can’t reveal too much, I promise this year’s edition will be unforgettable. We’re pouring our hearts into making it impactful and elegant, with a strong emphasis on finding a winner who can shine on the Miss Universe stage and beyond.
Q: What advice would you give to someone hoping to break into fashion, styling, or event direction internationally?
Start now—don’t wait for permission. Be ready to work behind the scenes, stay disciplined, and evolve constantly. The industry is fast and competitive, so reputation matters as much as talent. Build authentic relationships, stay curious, and above all, be consistent. If you put in the work with passion and humility, the world will notice.
As Kosh Hewage steps into this new chapter, he brings not just experience and vision but a deep sense of purpose. His journey from a young dreamer in Sri Lanka to Deputy Director of Miss Universe Bahrain and Egypt is a testament to what happens when creativity meets discipline and passion is fueled by purpose. With Hewage helping steer the ship, the future of Miss Universe Bahrain and Miss Universe Egypt promises to be as bold, inclusive, and boundary-breaking.
