It is sometimes, not really the place but the food that counts, when you eat out and for me, Lemongrass situated in Kotte is actually all about the food. They specialise in Thai as well as Indian cuisine and their Thai food is pretty delicious.

The restaurant has been around for just three years and was recently awarded the Thai Select seal by the Royal Thai Embassy. The certification, organised by Department of International Trade Promotion, Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, identifies Thai restaurants that offer at least 60 per cent authentic Thai food on their menus. The certificate also implies that the restaurants employ similar cooking methods as in Thailand while also importing ingredients from Thailand.

Awanthi Wijethilake, the owner of Lemongrass explained that she initially wanted to open up an Indian restaurant however she had a change of heart when she was introduced to Chef Suri.

Suri is from Thailand and was introduced to Awanthi by a friend, the food Suri prepared was so delicious that she decided to include Thai cuisine in her menu as well.

Awanthi states with great confidence that her chefs do not use any artificial flavour enhancers like MSG in the food prepared and says all the flavour comes from the copious amount of natural herbs and spices used. After trying out some of their food it is evident that no MSG was used, which is definitely a plus.

A Thai meal, for me, wouldn’t be complete without Papaya Salad. This yummy salad made with thin strips of papaya and a sweet and tart dressing accompanied with lightly toasted peanuts is worth trying. While their Green Curry Chicken is also tasty served with a thick gravy, the intense lemongrass flavour and thibbatu add some interesting textures to this dish.

These two dishes with Steamed Rice would be an ideal meal. While I’d also recommend their Garupa with Lime and Chilli Sauce. The fish was fresh and the sauce was tart and sweet and really complimented the fish.

I tried out their thin butter Naan with some of the delicious gravy from the Green Chicken Curry and it was an interesting combination however I didn’t have the chance to delve into their delicious looking Biryani.

The thing about Lemongrass for me was not quite the ambience but the food, and I’d definitely recommend take away.
