Petti Kadés in Colombo on WTF

  • 25 January 2017

What - Roadside shops
Where - Colombo 03
When - Everyday

Today on WTF, I walked around in Colombo to check out some petti kadés, where tea is served with no frills but it's an experience to have.

1. Kanthi's Kadé AKA - Akka's Kadé

This has been down Walukarama Road for the past 27 years and she is loving it. She has serious PR issues, but she has everything you will need, from the very popular Highland Milk to even broomsticks - she has them all in this one small place which connects to her living space - my favourite is her green bench to sit on!

2. Nihal Stores

Located at Inner Flower Road, is another one stop shop with all, from food and a refreshing cup of tea to even the Cadju Toffee which is a hit at my office. Speaking to Nihal he says "I had to grill the front area of the shop, as I have been robbed and now I have handed this business over to my son!"

3. Jayanitha Dabara - "One Day Shop"

A fun loving man with a big silver chain, he is the spokesperson for Flower Road and the apartment complex next to it, he says "My best seller is ginger tea and now my son is the boss!". I loved the son's personality who also got my number down saying "Any problem in Colpetty, call me!". He is also now the heir to this hole in the wall - but loved the time I spent with them.

4. Abdul Caffoor Mawatha - Kadé

I was too late as his place has gone into shut down mode, but I promise you, everyone at ANC has bought something from this place, and he does sell the best Seeni Sambol Bread, consisting of two large pieces, as it's nearly one bread cut into two. It's the most satisfying breakfast you can have!

So next time, give the kadés a chance as the people you meet here are fab!

Danu Innasithamby

Danu Innasithamby is proof that one person can survive on coffee, curiosity, and an unhealthy number of WhatsApp messages. A television host, actor, producer, writer, and professional chatterbox, he’s spent years turning conversations into stories and stories into memorable television. Born in Jaffna and proudly calling Sri Lanka home, Danu has built a career around asking the questions everyone else is thinking—but with a smile that usually gets him out of trouble. Whether he’s interviewing celebrities, hosting major events, judging competitions, or chasing the next great story, there’s never really a dull moment. When he’s not on screen, he’s busy supporting local talent, championing meaningful causes through Sri Lankan Smile, or convincing himself that “just one more project” is a perfectly reasonable life choice. Known for his humour, colourful suits, quick wit, and the ability to make almost anyone laugh, Danu believes life is best lived with good conversations, great food, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. If you spot him, don’t be surprised if you’re suddenly part of an interview… or at least a really entertaining conversation.
