For The Love Of Prawns On WTF

  • 28 September 2016

What - Isso
Where - No.2, Sulaiman Terrace, Off Jawatta Road, Colombo 5
Who - Apinash Sivagumaaran

Today on WTF, I went to the place that has mastered the art of making fine prawns. Isso is now the talk of the town for quality food and value for money portions! Isso opened doors this year and it’s already a place that many love to revisit. It’s the easiest place to make an order. It’s all about following a simple process.

The prices of the dishes depend on the size of the prawns you pick. I’m someone who likes my prawns small if not large, nothing bigger than that with the large at Rs. 900, XL at Rs. 1100 and XXL at Rs. 1300, and the large really is the best size as it just fills in with more flavour!

They have a three step ordering system where you first pick the prawn size, followed by the preparation and the type of carb. This is a fine idea! Let’s say you are on a diet like me. You can always choose a healthy one, but my favourite one is the sweet potato chips! However, they do throw in a good salad to keep the balance and that’s on the house!

I tried everything, or at least I wanted to!

The Northern Twist with the Roast Paan combination is amazing. I love the Jaffna twist to it! It’s different to what we make at home, but had a rich flavour!

The Local Favourite a.k.a hot butter prawns is also a great pick. Who can go wrong with hot butter prawns?

Speaking to the man who came up with this idea, Apinash, he says “I wanted to follow an international franchise style and made the portion style of ordering to make it easy for all of us.” But then I had to him ask about those who can never eat prawns and the ones who have a bad allergy. He laughed and said, “Yes, true we are losing a wide array of people, but prawns are to be celebrated and this place is for that!”

Not to forget the isso wade, which I picked as my starter (they call it pisso wade) which was pretty unique and BIG, not like what you get in Galle Face, but tasted delicious. So much value for money.

And when I was about to leave, I came across these beautiful milk toffees at the counter! It’s too good, it made me so happy I remembered Christmas!

A good place with a good vibe about it.

Danu Innasithamby is proof that one person can survive on coffee, curiosity, and an unhealthy number of WhatsApp messages. A television host, actor, producer, writer, and professional chatterbox, he’s spent years turning conversations into stories and stories into memorable television. Born in Jaffna and proudly calling Sri Lanka home, Danu has built a career around asking the questions everyone else is thinking—but with a smile that usually gets him out of trouble. Whether he’s interviewing celebrities, hosting major events, judging competitions, or chasing the next great story, there’s never really a dull moment. When he’s not on screen, he’s busy supporting local talent, championing meaningful causes through Sri Lankan Smile, or convincing himself that “just one more project” is a perfectly reasonable life choice. Known for his humour, colourful suits, quick wit, and the ability to make almost anyone laugh, Danu believes life is best lived with good conversations, great food, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. If you spot him, don’t be surprised if you’re suddenly part of an interview… or at least a really entertaining conversation.
