Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and has an impressive history of 2,500 years. Although in Sri Lanka it isn’t popular as Karate or Wushu, It’s the toughest form of combat sport from all martial arts.

Mr. Rohan Thushara from the UK Martial Art and Fitness Academy shares with us details about Muay Thai and his ongoing career with the sport.

How long have you been training in Muay Thai?

I started my martial arts career with Wushu. I’ve won the bronze medal at SAARC for Wushu. But I’ve been practicing Muay Thai for seven years now. And I’ve done my course in Thailand. I’ve been coaching Muay Thai for the past three years.

Why is Muay Thai different to other martial arts?

Muay Thai is the only martial art that permits the use of elbows and knees.

Is it as ruthless as it looks?

Yes definitely. It’s a ruthless game. Naturally, it’s very popular among the young.

Can anyone at any age do it?

Yes definitely. Anyone at any age can do Muay Thai (The Muay Thai grand master practiced until he was 85). With anyone who comes in, we look at age and capabilities and then decide which category to start.

The setbacks Muay Thai (Sri Lanka) faces?

The lack of support from the government is definitely a big setback. Another thing in general is that kids today should be encouraged to engage in sports, rather than invest their time solely in their studies.

Featured here are four internationally qualified fighters trained by Rohan Thushara.

First of all we would like to thank all those who have shown interest in the sport of Muay Thai. We conduct our classes in our own Dojo which is in a building situated within the premises of a temple - Vidyawardana Piriwen Viharaya (No. 27, Waidya Rd, Dehiwala).

Just to make things clear, MMA is different to Muay Thai in the sense that MMA is an amalgamation of various different combat arts. Muay Thai is an eight point full contact combat sport and is the national sport of Thailand. The main factor which sets Muay Thai apart from other arts is the use of elbows and knees. Generally, most MMA practitioners incorporate Muay Thai as their stand-up base due to its effectiveness

Dear Suresh, we find your audacious attempt to mislead the public by posting fake unrelated FB links (https://www.facebook.com/colombofightnight.cfn.mma?fref=ts#sthash.Wv4IolqS.dpuf), irritable and at the same time quite amusing. It is evident that you are mirroring the despicable ideology of your so called MMA Masters/instructors who are devoid of the martial arts philosophy.
