In an era where people resort to electronic greetings owing to the time factor and convenience, handmade items hold great value and add personal touch to the most everyday greeting.

“Handmade items are a real opportunity to express one's personality in a unique way,” said Yashoda Dayaratne, fondly known as ‘Yash’ who specializes in personalized handmade greeting cards including customized “pop up” cards and gift items, tailor-made under the brand – ‘Designed by Y@sh’.

“I love colours. The passion I had for colours lead me to learn more about fine art by one of the best Gurus - Mr. Lionel Ranaweera,” says Yash.

Seeing a collection of a friend of hers motivated her to put her creative instincts to some good use – especially since she had a lot of time in her hands right after completing her MSc. Recalling her initial experimental projects that laid founding stones for ‘Designed by Y@sh’, she makes special mention of her first creation – “Happy Pot” which she posted on facebook.

The comments she received served to fuel her desire to put her new found hobby to greater use.

What defines her creations is the detail and effort that goes into each piece and the fact that each design is personalized.

Talking of the unique feature of her ‘pop up cards’ Yash said, “I’m sure anybody would love to see his/her face when he/she opens up a card, this is what defines the pop-up cards I design.”

It is her family that is behind the conversion of a hobby into a business. The satisfaction that comes with creating such masterpieces and the appreciation followed by ecstatic customers, no doubt encourages her a great deal.

The latest product on shelves is called, the “Story Card Album” which enables customers to gift a loved one an album full of cherished memories captured in frame.

One of the challenges in making ‘Designed by Y@sh’ a success is meeting the increasing demand creating each piece manually which impedes production limits and takes a toll on time.

However, Yash remains positive and hopeful about the future of ‘Designed by Y@sh’ as she aspires to release her products to the local market and expand to the international arena with time.

Orders can be made via the ‘Designed by Y@sh’ Facebook page. The pieces can be delivered to your doorstep and depending on the requirement - number of cards and type of article, the date of delivery may vary.

While Yash specializes in greeting cards, she also makes wedding cards, cake boxes, photo frames, pencil holders, personalized pots and a range of other creations to choose from!

Designed by Y@sh carries the motto – “A card to remember” and is sure to add that magical touch to your greeting or gift! Take a closer look at the cards and gift items on the ‘Designed by Y@sh’ Facebook page.
