Caged and helpless

A sight too common in our island…

In the name of money, innocent dogs, cats and birds are caged for hours on end in small enclosures at so called pet shops and kept on the roadside not shielded from the dust, dirt or noise of the busy streets!

Are these really the conditions under which you want to purchase a pet for your home? A pet that has been separated from its mother at too early an age and kept caged for long periods of time, thus effecting its healthy growth.

Shouldn’t there be some law against such sales and some regulations that should come in to place to ensure that pets are reared in healthy conditions before being sold off to homes?

Pictured here are the dogs, cats and birds in a pet shop in Colombo. Animal cruelty?

existing laws should be made use of/amended to ban such pet shops.

people should refrain from buying pets from such places .

I've seen they sell fish very selfish manner.

The fish are trapped in small polythene bags and kept all along the day in the streets. I myself have seen some in near dead conditions and there's nothing we can do about it.

Our Buddhist monks must take the lead on this to shut down such shops. This kind of shops did not exist during earlier days in this country. If this is not stopped very soon there will be Dog meat stalls, Cat meat stalls , Pigeon meat stalls on the roads. This will bring evilness to the country if not stopped.

Thank you to the writer for highlighting this pet shop. I've seen this place myself and feel so sad for the poor little animals - dogs and cats as well as the birds. I do not have money to purchase them and neither the resources to look after them, and feel so helpless when I see them trapped in those tiny cages. Can the media enlighten the necessary authorities on this? These animals need to be looked after. Often when I pass this place at night I wonder how they must be, closed up inside that
