Painting with light - Sanjaya Vithana

Photography is something that many youngsters have found interest in and invest quite a hefty sum in as well. The price of a basic DSLR Camera could range between LKR 45,000 – 60,000. Some parents might wonder, “Is it worth it?” It is definitely worth it if you know how to use it properly and get some good images; it could bring self-satisfaction and a decent income as well.

Sanjaya Vithana is a photographer with many years of experience in the field and by experience, I mean that he knows photography since its “glory days” of film rolls and developing pictures.

Sanjaya is an all-rounder when it comes to photography, although he says he does not like doing events. However, his roots like many young photographers, began at home although in Sanjaya’s case he did not own a camera until his A-Level years; he learnt through reading books on photography and then after his school education worked for two and a half years at Photochrome Pvt Ltd, gaining vast experience in Commercial Photography.

Eventually Sanjaya was recruited as a visiting lecturer at the Department of Integrated Design in the University of Moratuwa and has been there for 12 years.

Sanjaya now plans to pass on his knowledge to upcoming photographers by conducting a course; he says, “I started the class to give a good foundation to anyone who’s over 16 years old and who wants to start photography (paint with light). This is a course for beginners and for Graphic Designers because I see lots of mistakes being made in the graphics field, especially when using photographs due to lack of basic knowledge.”
