Rice & Curry - Sick!

  • 01 April 2013

Flight:  Venice

Date:  6th March

Sometimes or rather very rarely, extreme delays happen due to unsatisfactory weather, aircraft damage, etc. Most airhostesses consider themselves lucky when these acts of god occur; as with the busy schedules, it is definitely worth an extra day of rest on layover, especially when the destination has so much to offer.

Having to travel on ultra long haul flights, most of the crew has their favourite food joints around the world; In New York, a jumbo chilli hotdog stand, In Seoul a BBQ restaurant down, In Beijing McDonalds (Strictly sticking to a veggie burger or a Salad to avoid eating dog or snake mistakenly) In Auckland a Sushi Bar nearby the Harbour, and in Italy any cafe serving pasta.

Feeding on pastas and pizzas for days, I was craving for string hoppers with coconut sambol for breakfast, rice & curry for lunch and coconut roti and chicken curry for dinner. It’s pretty easy to find Indian food corners even in the most remote corners of earth though it is not that easy to find the fusion of flavours of Sri Lanka. Staring at the remarkable Lido beach yet yearning for a scrumptious “isso vade” at the Galle Face; finally it was time to head back to home sweet home.

The flight went smoothly, and many holidaymakers and businessman were smiling and happy to be there. During the meal service, there was one disgruntled gentleman, who had signs of a rice belly was fumingly screaming at a patient airhostess. “I want the rice & curry! The reason I booked myself in Business class is that I thought I will get whatever I want...I have been away from home for almost 2 weeks, eating bloody pizzas, pasta, and I JUST WANT RICE & CURRY!”

He was undoubtedly homesick or rather rice & curry-sick. Next time maybe he should make a special meal request before the flight “ONLY RICE & CURRY”, as he seems to get upset pretty easily and huffed and puffed the airhostess who got screamed at.

Thanks to the extra crew meals loaded, we created a masterpiece of culinary delight as we didn’t have the specific meal he requested. It was the closest to rice and curry we could get at 30,000ft above and at a glimpse of the rice the passenger just calmed down. I sincerely hope his wife just didn’t make pasta tonight for dinner to impress him!
