As Edgar Alan Poe said
“O, Times! O, Manners! It is my opinion
That you are changing sadly your dominion
I mean the reign of manners hath long ceased,
For men have none at all, or bad at least”
Manners or polite gestures fade out day by day on ground and also equally above the clouds. Travelling, out of many things is undoubtedly stressful. Passengers go through a tiring procedure at the airports before getting on board a plane (where they vent it all out unfortunately). Starting from packing those bags it’s a stressful process; scanning through the traffic jams to make it on time to the airport, passing security screening, beating up the lines at the immigration, and finally running to the boarding gate. Passengers do carry quite a lot of baggage these days as well.
Sometimes I wish if Airbus or Boeing could make the overhead lockers bigger. Some passengers are also under the notion that the overhead bin on top of their seat belongs only to them. They don’t simply understand that sharing and caring does go a long way, if you are stuck inside the plane for a few good hours. Some as I saw today would simply remove an all ready stowed baggage, to stow theirs and walk away leaving a poor airhostess to deal with it. As boarding was almost done many people had settled in, we started the pre departure services. With the final call a passenger still hanging on to his mobile phone talking, came running in to the air craft with his massive cabin bag.

Too bad for him most of the hat racks were all ready full. Still engaged in his business conversation, he pulled out a luggage that was all ready stowed in, gestured at the passenger who was seated with a worried look in his face, and handed it over to him “Is this yours?” and chucked his baggage in and walked away to his seat.
We were awe struck by his demeanor and we apologized to the baffled passenger on behalf of him. It is just too annoying to be saying sorry for somebody else all the time. This passenger went on to be rude despite his expensive business attire. It was remarkable that he didn’t even have an ounce of selflessness in him to excuse himself before pulling out somebody else’s belongings, or reclining his seat during the meal service or taking someone else’s’ pillow to support his neck, back and arms. As it is like a kindergarten up there we ended up telling him to return the pillow to the poor old lady, put his seat back up right during meal services, all the way to our destination.
What made all of us pout was as soon as we landed he was again on his mobile phone trying to pull his heavy bag down with one arm, and gave an airhostess the “are you just going to stand there?” look. Surprisingly, the gentleman whose bag was displaced thanks to him at the beginning of the flight gave him a manly hand, of course not to even receive a fake thank you. After all it was definitely a real test of manners to be able to put up with bad manners pleasantly.
Love, Dany
