I am sorry that I am sorry!

Flight: Male’

Date:  5th June

As an airhostess I say sorry to different people, for various reasons on board every day. At any working environment I am sure this apologetic phrase is used more sensibly. But inside an aircraft, the airhostess’s say (or are expected to say) sorry for almost everything, sometimes even for the most ridiculous scenarios.

On this short flight which takes less an hour or two of interactions with the passengers, I realized that I said “sorry” over 50 times! If I write down the random yet usual situations that an airhostess has to use the word “sorry”, it would exceed the pages of my diary. It also makes me think how wonderful it would be, if I could actually print some of them out, and hand this over to the passengers when they come on board.

Dear Passengers,

I am SORRY in advance for…

  • Having had to look at your boarding pass to let you inside the aircraft. This is for security reasons, to make sure that you are at the right aircraft.

  • Not lifting your heavy luggage, as you managed to carry it all the way from home to the airport, though you seemed to have contracted a sudden back ache.

  • Not upgrading you to business class because you have developed a heart pain, instead I have to off load you.

  • Not giving you any more alcohol as you are all ready drunk!

  • Not having your vegetarian meal, as you have not pre-ordered.

  • Not having freshly chopped onions, freshly squeezed juice, fresh milk, or any other “fresh” food items as nothing inside this aircraft is fresh.

  • Not taking your babies diapers to my hand, as you are not suppose to change it on your tray table, but in the baby changing table in the lavatory and dispose the diaper in the toilet.

  • Not taking your bag of vomit to my hand as I am not your close kin who is comfortable in contracting a communicable disease.

  • Not lending you my pen, for you would never return it back to me in a “second” as you specify.

  • Not saying sorry for anything that is not mentioned above, that you are expecting an apology from an airhostess.

Yours sincerely,
The  Airhostess.
