Sharing her three-storyed house with her husband and daughter, Thushanee Illangakoon loves to spend time in her rooftop lounge which has an alfresco feel to it. Inspired by the vibrant colours of Morocco, Thushanee has attempted to recreate a bit of Morocco in her rooftop lounge.
What is your favourite room in your house?
The rooftop lounge which is christened as “The Halmilla.”
Q What are its features?
It divides (although not demarcated physically) into two spaces, the workroom-cum- social room, where one could work and relax. The other hosts the well-stocked bar. It also opens out to a rooftop terrace which we have kept minimalistic in décor, encouraging the enjoyment of being surrounded by nature, and just being a little bit closer to the clouds.
Q What do you like most about it?
It has a very cosy, homely feeling to it, plus there is so much of natural air circulating that once you open the windows even on the hottest day you are relatively kept cool for no cost at all!
Q What is your favourite piece of furniture or accessory in that room?
As much as I enjoy lounging on the floor cushions, I would pick the record player as my favourite.
Q Why is that particular piece a favourite?
It brings back childhood memories of my very first exposure to music as a toddler; the record player at my parent’s home. It creates a warm atmosphere that helps me relax.
Q When creating this space, what inspired you?
I’ve always loved the colour and the vibrancy of Moroccan décor.
Q If there is anything you could change in your favourite room what would it be?
I would love to reduce the neutral tones of the walls and introduce more splashes of colour.
Q Does this favourite room have a theme, if so what is it?
The predominant theme is, of course, Moroccan but we’ve added a touch of DC comics and Sri Lankan culture capturing the diverse interests of the family.
Q What is the colour scheme of this favourite room?
White, Black and Brown in the main which we have accentuated with deep tones of burgundy, red, purple and orange.
Q How much time do you spend in your favourite room?
When at home, every morning for sure, sometimes extending to the full day based on work commitments.
Q When it comes to interiors, are you a person who believes minimalism or do you pack the room with stuff?
Oh, total minimalism. I loathe crowded spaces so much so that I regularly practice decluttering.
Q Any mementoes from your travels in your favourite room?
We have a few, a cigar box from KL, Alladin lamp from Dubai and a few souvenirs from other destinations.
