Decor trends for 2016

Decor trends have changed vastly over the years. We zone in on some major trends for 2016 and speak to some professionals.

It’s going to be a great year for weddings! With exquisite, customised, rustic pieces, ceremony décor will no longer be the boring flowers and pearls!

In past years, we’ve seen brides obsessed with the typical royal weddings or something straight off a Pinterest board.

However as we kiss goodbye to the past, we say hello to more unique styles of decor.

Weddings are now about reflecting who the couple are. This in turn gives out a fun vibe and experience, not just for the couple but also the guests present. Goodbye outdated and boring!

Here are some top ceremony décor trending in 2016 around the world. You’d be mesmerised for sure and anticipate your big day!

Focus on Metal

Bright, large metallics are surprisingly quite handy, although this depends on how and where you bring them into your revelry. We’re talking about glitzy gold centre pieces to pop out in terms of room décor at a black tie wedding or gorgeous cooper lanterns at an outdoor reception or a rustic table cape.

They can be elegant, whimsical, ethereal or even quite natural. Rose Gold, no matter the venue or theme will definitely show up either on napkin holders or even table linen. After all, even food and drink tends to have that particular colour hues from the shiny blush on icings and rose hued champagne. However, silver. Now that’s something that’s on the decrease.

Lighting

Is the key to setting a romantic mood. After all, aren't weddings all about intimacy and romance? When it comes to wedding lighting – it's literally the best way to create that particular atmosphere, so lean towards pendant lights or vintage chandeliers that might have to be modern as well as candelabras to cast a soft glow.

Flowers & tone on tone explosion

This will pretty much be the ombre effect, where you ask the florist to pick out three to five different flowers in the same complementing shade. To create a romantic feel, stick to the opposite sides of the colour spectrum – pale or deeply saturated. But for a fun feeling? Set the table with hyper vivid neon or a playful sorbet shade.

Add a twist to centrepieces

Food is love and food is life, so why not add the element of coffee beans and fragrant herbs into your centerpieces or garlands or even seasonal fruits and vegetables?

It clearly doesn’t have to be flowers. Even potted trees, bonsais, succulents, ferns, sprigs, decorative leaves - they can be the focal point of the décor. Flowering plants and blooming branches also work well as creative centerpieces!

TIP
Mix up your centrepieces.
There’s no hard and fast rule
to have all the tables
look the same.
So go crazy and wild
in creating unique
centrepieces
for each table.

We spoke to a few of Sri Lanka’s talented wedding planners and ceremony décor specialists about ceremony decor and this is what they had to say.

“Ceremony decor as a whole is important.
However it doesn't have to go over the top,
it needs to depict one's personality
and be personal to you. For instance
if the trend is to go with pink and
you personally don't fancy that colour,
don't go for it. Instead keep it simple,
beautiful and natural.
We’ve seen vintage for a very long time.
And brides love that look for a wedding;
however I cannot necessarily point it out as a trend."

owner of the Banquet Company

When you hear the name MAIC, we can assure you that this particular wedding or event is gonna be mind blowingly awesome.

Charith & Eric are specialists in “concept décor” - they're all about uniquely created ambience, all inspired by none other than you!

“I think ceremony décor is rather important, however the question is to what extent, although we do place high importance. Since décor plays an important role depending on how much of it and how relevant it is, everything we do is custom made with relation to the client - we’d sit down with them, question them on all the tiny details from how they met, their travel preferences, what sort of food they like and create a concept that’s very unique to them.

At times, we barely have anything to do with flowers. We don’t really work with flowers especially since it plays a small role and we try doing something relevant.

When it comes to the latest trends, we don’t necessarily follow a trend. What we do as a whole is a trend, you can say we're the trendsetters.

However Sri Lankans, on the average, take time to get used to new concepts and trends especially since they are very much into floral, but we feel there’s something beyond that and we aim to do something unique.”

From celebrity weddings to engagements, they’ve got it covered! They believe in giving the clients the personal attention they deserve!

They were the first local wedding planners to reach an international platform when they got interviewed by the BBC. They've done celebrity weddings as well, namely Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath, Nadii Premadasa, Farveez Maharoof and Lahiru Perara, just to name a few.

“Ceremony decorations are definitely important! It’s the key thing to enhance the venue and many weddings have different wedding themes and it’s quite an important aspect. We’re now moving on from huge themes - from the usual fairytale wedding etc. and are more focused on English, rustic, vintage themes, where colours are concerned.

We’ve seen a change from ballroom to outdoor receptions which place heavy emphasis on lighting and intimacy. What we do is we always give preference to our clients to let us know what they like, even if it’s something very tiny and we build up on that for the theme, using it as inspiration.”
