Home Baker of The Week - Dhananji Hewage

Full time mommy to her now almost 2 year old beautiful baby girl Tenara and owner of Tenu’s Cakes and Bakes, Dhananji Hewage always knew she wanted to get into the business field but didn't think that it will be the food industry.

“I have always loved baking cakes for my family member's birthdays since the day that my mother taught me to make the butter cake with Buttercream Frosting when I was about 14 years old. So I decided to start my own baking business once my daughter was born because someday I wanted her to proudly say that her ammi is a Baker or a businesswoman if someone asks”.

Which food personality would you like to be reborn as?
Nigella Lawson. She is the domestic goddess of all times for me. She is my inspiration and my foodie hero.

What is the most ridiculous client request you have accommodated?
So far nothing ridiculous as such because all my clients were so flexible and lovely.

If you were to pick a reality cooking competition to take part in, what would you pick?
Zumbo's Just Desserts. I absolutely love all the judges (Adriano Zumbo & Rachel Khoo) and the tricks & techniques that you can learn from Mr.Zumbo who is famous as "Patissier of Pain" in the baking industry.

You’ve been given the opportunity to bake something for your favourite celeb. Who would you pick and what would you make?
That'll be Hugh Jackman and I'll make my version of his childhood favorite creme caramel pudding which he calls Creme Caramel Cake.

What is your favourite food memory?

The day that i made my daughter's birthday cake, cupcakes and cookies for her first birthday.

Funniest / most embarrassing kitchen incident?
When I was younger, I was helping my mum bake a cake and decorate it and my sister who was about 4-5 years old got on top of the table because she wanted to see what we were doing and the next thing you know the whole cake was smashed all over the kitchen floor.

What is the most challenging ingredient you have used?
Fondant icing. You have to be quick and very cautious when working with it. But once you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake.

What nonexistent food combination or dish do you wish would becomes a reality?
Well it's kind of hard to think of a combination like that because now almost all kinds of weird combinations exists which tastes so good. For an example Maple bacon ice cream. Who would have thought that it will be a huge hit. So for now I would say Cheese flavored ice cream maybe.

What would you choose to be your “Last Supper” meal?
A good BBQ and a gooey brownie with Vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and caramelized nuts as a dessert.
