What made you enter the world of Art?
I have always been fascinated by the concept of creation - all forms of creation. I have wondered how whoever created something paid such enormous and minute attention to everything that was created. I try and reach a higher level of imagination and creation through my filmmaking. This is what made me enter the world of art.

How is the movie industry in Sri Lanka?
I was appointed the President of the Film Directors’ Guild of Sri Lanka recently. I feel now it’s our turn to think collectively on the future of the Sri Lankan film industry. We have a population of over 20 million people in the country but have an average of 3 million patrons of the film industry. We need to work toward increasing this number and developing the industry to reach a larger audience. Also digitalisation of the cinemas in Sri Lanka should be our main priority now.

How is “Dark in the White Lights” doing internationally?
The film has been received very well at the international level with its world premiere being at the prestigious 68th Locarno International Film Festival under the International Competition Section; it was nominated for the Golden Leopard. The film was screened thrice at the festival and was received very well by the audience and critics. The film has been invited to be screened by another 14 international film festivals in countries including Australia, Singapore, Busan (Korea), Russian Federation, Gothenburg, Jerusalem, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, Turkey, Spain, Dubai and India.

What is one of your favourite quotes?
I have my own quote which I believe in “Be in awareness of everything you do, so even when you do nothing, you can still experience life at its highest”.

What would you like to see changed in the entertainment industry of Sri Lanka?
I would like to see an entertainment industry that would actually entertain every citizen of the country so that they do not seek entertainment in the parliament.

If you had 30 minutes of free-time, how would you spend it?
I’d look at myself, know that I am breathing, thank nature which is the source of my breath.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?
Auto rickshaw on the auto road

What song would be the soundtrack to your life?
Yael Naim’s “New Soul”

Any new projects you are working on?
I am working on a feature film based on one of the most controversial novels written by a Sri Lankan author who lives abroad. Unfortunately I won’t be able to disclose further details at this point as the project is still in the making.

If...

If you could paint a picture of any scenery you’ve seen before, what would you paint?
The twilight sky.

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?
I would like to be as curious, joyful and free as a four and a half year old always. Because when you turn five, you start receiving and internalising things you pick up from this egocentric world.

If you knew the world was ending in 2016, what would you do differently?
I live every day as if it were my last. When I go to sleep at the end of the day, I am aware that I may not wake up the following day. So I live every day to the fullest.

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?
David Lynch.

Pirates of the Indian Ocean
